Now let's talk universal childcare, one of Mamdani's crown jewel campaign pledges. The Center for New York City Affairs, a nonpartisan research group, just dropped a study pegging the annual cost at $8.7 to $9.3 billion. That is roughly 50 percent higher than what Mamdani advertised during the campaign. He sold voters one number. Reality handed them a completely different, much larger number. In the private sector, that kind of pricing discrepancy gets you hauled into court. In politics, it gets you a second term.
And how about those free buses everyone was promised? Still three bucks a ride, folks. But here is the hilarious twist: riders are acting like the fare has already been eliminated. MTA Chair Janno Lieber confirmed that paid bus ridership dropped nearly 8 percent in June compared to the previous year, while subway and commuter rail numbers held steady. The MTA collected $31 million less from bus passengers during Mamdani's first six months compared to the same window in 2025. So the buses are not free, but people are riding like they are, which means the transit authority is hemorrhaging cash while Mamdani gets to cosplay as the guy who delivered on his promise.
This is the classic trajectory of every promise that sounds amazing on a campaign stage but melts the moment it touches a spreadsheet.
