Zohran Mamdani, the freshly minted mayor of New York City, went on camera this week and basically told everyone that international bodies should have more authority than the United States Constitution. You know, that little document he swore an oath to uphold. As USA Journal reported, Mamdani wants America to join the International Criminal Court and start executing its warrants on U.S. soil, including the one for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Bold strategy for a guy whose job is mostly about potholes and subway delays.
But wait, it gets better. Mamdani also declared that American military operations against Iran were a violation of so-called international law. He even managed to blame Jewish New Yorkers for antisemitic protests that happened outside a synagogue, because the synagogue hosted an organization that helps people immigrate to Israel. Somehow, in Mamdani's brain, the victims of antisemitism are actually the ones responsible for it. Truly galaxy-brain thinking.
Now here's where the selective application of his supposed principles gets really entertaining. The ICC, which Mamdani treats like the Supreme Court of Planet Earth, also has an arrest warrant out for Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro for crimes against humanity. Does Mamdani want that warrant executed too? Well, not exactly. He acknowledged Maduro is a dictator but then started rambling about the importance of "process" when it comes to changing governments. So the ICC is the ultimate moral authority when it issues warrants against Israel, but when it targets a socialist strongman, suddenly we need to slow down and think about procedure. Convenient!
You know what Mamdani never seems to invoke his beloved international law against? Hamas, which massacred 1,200 people and kidnapped hundreds of hostages. Hezbollah, which has been killing Americans and Israelis for roughly four decades. Those organizations apparently get a free pass in the Mamdani version of global justice.
The ICC itself is quite the institution to be building your entire political philosophy around. The United States has never joined it. Its chief prosecutor is currently under investigation for sexual misconduct. And its warrants carry absolutely zero legal weight within American borders. But sure, let's reorganize our entire constitutional framework around it because the mayor of New York City thinks it sounds sophisticated.
Dave Rubin offered a prediction that every Democrat will adopt this position by 2028. Whether or not that comes true, the pattern here is pretty clear. Mamdani uses the language of international norms like a Swiss Army knife, pulling out whichever blade is useful for advancing an agenda that consistently targets America and Israel while giving socialist regimes a gentle pat on the head.
The oath of office that Mamdani took requires him to support and defend the Constitution. Not the Rome Statute, not the UN Charter, and definitely not whatever the ICC's scandal-plagued prosecution office cooks up on any given Tuesday. He took that oath and then went on camera to explain that he thinks something else should be in charge. New York City voters put this man in office, and the rest of the country is watching this unfold with a mixture of horror and morbid fascination.
