New York City's socialist mayor, Mamdani, decided to swing by Staten Island's National Night Out Against Crime on Tuesday evening, and folks, it went about as well as you'd expect a guy who wants to defund the police showing up to a pro-police rally would go. According to USA Journal, roughly 3,500 residents, families, and law enforcement supporters were gathered at Midland Beach. They greeted their mayor with thunderous boos and chants of "go home" that chased him right off the podium.
The man lasted less than 60 seconds up there. Sixty seconds! That's shorter than a microwave burrito cycle. He smiled through the whole ordeal because, honestly, what's the alternative when thousands of constituents are collectively telling you to get lost? He offered some greetings, thanked the organizers, and then vanished faster than your motivation on a Monday morning.
Here's the beautiful part. This is the same guy who wrote back in 2020 that "we don't need an investigation to know that the NYPD is racist, anti-queer & a major threat to public safety." He literally campaigned on gutting police funding and dismantling law enforcement to, and I quote, "end the cycle of violence." He scrapped a proposal that would have brought 5,000 additional officers to the NYPD. He's spent months labeling ICE agents as dangers to public safety while actively obstructing federal immigration enforcement.
And then somebody on his staff looked at the calendar and said, "Hey boss, there's a big police appreciation event tonight. You should totally go." Genius move.
Let's also appreciate the geography here. Staten Island is the borough where Mamdani pulled a whopping 23 percent of the vote. Twenty-three percent! That means roughly three out of four people in that crowd already had strong opinions about him before he even opened his mouth. Walking into that event was like a cat voluntarily strolling into a room full of rocking chairs.
NYPD unions had been sounding alarms for months, even before the election, warning that his openly hostile stance toward police would crater officer morale and damage the relationship between cops and the communities they protect. Tuesday night's crowd was basically a living, breathing, booing confirmation of every single warning they issued.
And these weren't political operatives or organized protesters. These were regular New York City families who came out on a Tuesday night to show appreciation for their local officers. They saw the mayor who treats cops like villains walk onto their stage, and they responded accordingly.
His team almost certainly anticipated this reception. You don't wander into a pro-police gathering on Staten Island without understanding the room. The apparent strategy was that showing up would look better than skipping it entirely. That calculation was spectacularly wrong. The wall of boos communicated more than any prepared remarks ever could have.
For approximately 45 glorious seconds, the entire country got a front row seat to what Staten Island residents have known all along.
