Nothing says "ready for Congress" quite like blaming your own country for the worst terrorist attack on its soil, but here we are. Melat Kiros, who just unseated longtime Democratic incumbent Diana DeGette in a New York primary, is getting a whole lot of attention for her views on September 11th, immigration, and a laundry list of other topics that read like a Democratic Socialists of America bingo card. As The American Tribune reported, Kiros has repeatedly suggested the 9/11 attacks were a consequence of American foreign policy.
During a June 2026 interview, Kiros was asked directly whether the attacks were the result of U.S. foreign policy. Her response was a real crowd pleaser. "Inevitable in the sense that we destabilized a lot of the Middle East that forced people to believe that another act of violence was the only response," she stated. "Inevitable" is a bold word choice for nearly 3,000 people being murdered, but sure, go off.
Kiros was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and came to the United States as an infant after her father was selected through the U.S. Diversity Visa Lottery. The family settled in Aurora, Colorado, a Denver suburb. Before her political career took off, Kiros worked as an attorney at the law firm Sidley Austin in New York. She also worked as a barista while managing student loans, which is the kind of biographical detail that practically writes its own campaign ad.
In 2023, Kiros published an article on Medium defending pro-Palestinian student activists and criticizing how law firms responded to activism following the October 7, 2023 terrorist attacks against Israel. Shortly after the post went live, Sidley Austin showed her the door. Most people would take that as a signal to maybe recalibrate. Kiros apparently took it as motivation to run for Congress.
Her policy platform is basically a progressive wish list on steroids. She wants to abolish ICE, release all detainees without criminal records immediately, and create an "immediate pathway to citizenship for every single" illegal alien and asylum seeker in the country. We are talking about roughly 20 million people. She also wants to eliminate private health insurance, impose a moratorium on new data centers, establish federal rent stabilization, raise the federal minimum wage, and end U.S. military aid to Israel.
Kiros has racked up endorsements from the Democratic Socialists of America (of which she is a member), Justice Democrats, the Sunrise Movement, the Working Families Party, and CAIR Action. She has previously described herself ideologically as a democratic socialist, which at this point feels like an understatement.
According to Trending Politics News, the 1st District in Colorado, which includes Denver, is a deep blue seat, making Kiros a heavy favorite in the general election. So congratulations, Denver. You might be sending someone to Washington who thinks the deadliest terrorist attack in American history was basically our fault. Democracy is a beautiful thing.
