If you ever wanted a textbook example of a political party stepping on a rake, look no further than House Democrats who unanimously voted against making Trump's tax cuts permanent and are now watching Republicans gleefully remind every voter about it for the next year and a half.
As USA Journal reported, the National Republican Congressional Committee is rolling out a new ad campaign timed to the one year anniversary of Trump signing the Working Families Tax Cuts into law on July 4, 2025. The bill made his first term tax cuts permanent and added provisions eliminating taxes on tips, overtime, and Social Security benefits. Every single House Democrat voted against it. Every. Single. One.
Now here is where it gets painful for the blue team. When Americans filed their taxes in April, refunds jumped 11 percent, with the average refund topping $3,400. About 25 million taxpayers took advantage of the no tax on overtime provision, six million benefited from no tax on tips, and 27 million claimed the no tax on Social Security benefit. On top of that, 12 million small business owners saw an average tax reduction of $7,000. Families with children born between 2028 and 2028 can also receive $1,000 government contributions to Trump Accounts for their kids.
So naturally Democrats looked at all of that and said, "Yeah, we should repeal this." Arizona congressional candidate Amish Shah called the Working Families Tax Cuts "abominable" and called for their "wholesale repeal." Wholesale repeal. That is the political equivalent of telling voters you want to reach into their wallets and take back the money they just got to keep. Bold strategy.
The NRCC ad lays it out pretty simply: "Republicans lowered taxes on the working class, stopped welfare for illegals, more jobs for Americans. But Democrats want to take it all away. Their plan? You pay thousands more. Inflation, higher gas prices, open borders. The choice is clear: Republicans keep fighting to lower our costs."
NRCC Spokesman Mike Marinella put a bow on it: "One year later, the contrast for America couldn't be clearer. Republicans put more money back in Americans' pockets with bigger refunds, lower costs, and historic tax relief. Democrats voted to raise taxes on working families after fueling historic inflation, and they'd do it again if they get the chance."
Look, you do not need to be a political strategist to understand that running against tax cuts that already showed up in people's refund checks is a tough sell. It is like campaigning against free pizza at a pizza party. The Democrats are currently in the middle of their own internal war between moderates and the democratic socialist wing, and while they figure out which direction to go, Republicans are happily running ads reminding voters that the entire Democratic caucus voted to make their taxes go back up.
Good luck with that messaging, folks.
