North African Muslims break into Spain from Morocco, causing havoc and chaos

Thousands of migrant males from Morocco swam or climbed border fences to breach Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta, overwhelming local police and sparking a major humanitarian and security crisis.

In just one day, between 2,000 and 3,000 people crossed by land and sea, on top of 1,500 arrivals the week before.

At least nine lost their lives during the dangerous journey. Spain responded by sending 60 military personnel and 200 specialized police to support the Civil Guard and patrol coastal waters.

Ceuta’s president described the scene as total chaos and pushed for a national emergency, though Madrid said it didn’t meet the legal criteria.

Meanwhile, Spain and Morocco agreed to speed up the return of undocumented migrants, and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez traveled to Ceuta to oversee security efforts.
