Gavin Newsom spent 65 hours in Michigan and only 17 people showed up to his barbecue.
The California governor is clearly gearing up for a 2028 presidential run, but his first big swing state audition was nothing short of embarrassing. As reported, Newsom's team cranked out slickly produced social media clips that racked up a million views online. Meanwhile, in the real world, Spencer Pratt roasted the governor on X for attracting what he called "a massive crowd of 17 septuagenarians" to a local cookout. A million clicks on your phone. Seventeen warm bodies on the ground. That ratio tells you everything.
But the crowd size was only the appetizer. The main course was a buffet of political blunders that would make any seasoned operative cringe. Rep. Debbie Dingell, the Michigan powerhouse who was largely behind the push to make her state the fifth 2028 nominating contest, told reporters she never got a call from Newsom's camp. She also made sure to mention she's a "car girl," a not so subtle jab at his ban on new gas vehicle sales in California starting in 2035. When the person who controls your path to an early primary win is publicly saying she never expected to hear from you, that's a five alarm fire.
It gets worse. Newsom's team also managed to big league Virgie Rollins, the powerful chair of the DNC's Black Caucus. Then there was the Ann Arbor fundraiser fiasco. His people apparently scheduled two competing events in the same city. State House Democrats caught wind and bailed, claiming the donor pool in Ann Arbor was too small. Ann Arbor. Too few Democratic donors. That's like saying Silicon Valley ran out of venture capitalists. Somebody on Team Newsom either skipped the homework or couldn't wrangle the various party factions who were supposed to roll out the welcome mat.
Then Newsom sat down for nearly an hour with Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic Senate nominee who has publicly stated Israel lacks a right to exist and who received backing from Hasan Piker, a figure known for praising Mao Zedong. El-Sayed is currently hemorrhaging support from former Biden officials, Jewish donors, and working class Democrats who are flocking to Republican Mike Rogers. Cozying up to a candidate that radioactive might help with Michigan's Arab American voters, but it hands every future debate opponent a gift wrapped attack line.
The bigger issue here is baked into Newsom's DNA as a California politician. Golden State Democrats never truly face competitive races. They lock down the right donor networks, cruise through primaries, and never develop the grassroots retail instincts that actually win general elections. Kamala Harris proved this the hard way, burning through $1.4 billion and losing every single swing state.
Newsom's Michigan trip was supposed to be a splashy debut. Instead it revealed a campaign that can't do basic advance work, can't coordinate with local leaders, and mistakes viral content for real support. The internet gave him a million views. Michigan gave him seventeen retirees and a reality check.
