The governor of California, who is currently facing a federal criminal investigation, just put his signature on something called the Stop Nick Shirley Act, according to reports. They didn't even try to hide who they were targeting. They put the man's name right on the legislation like a hit list.
So who is Nick Shirley? He's an independent journalist and YouTuber who has been absolutely torching California politicians by documenting fraud on camera. We're talking about knocking on doors of registered voters listed as 126 years old. We're talking about filming a hotel the state purchased for $8 million that now needs $20 million in repairs, working out to roughly $625,000 per homeless resident. He's been showing how the state's honor system elections can be manipulated with alarming ease.
Naturally, California Democrats responded not by fixing the fraud, but by going after the guy with the camera.
Assembly Bill 2624 expands the state's Safe at Home address confidentiality program to cover employees of nonprofits that serve immigrants. Critics and Republican lawmakers say the real purpose is crystal clear: shield the exact immigrant advocacy organizations Shirley has been investigating from on-camera journalism.
Now here's where it gets absolutely wild. The bill's primary sponsor is Assemblywoman Mia Bonta. Her husband? Rob Bonta, California's Attorney General, the very person whose job involves investigating fraud in the state. Rob Bonta himself is also facing federal scrutiny. The woman pushing legislation to criminalize fraud investigations is married to the top law enforcement official in a state drowning in fraud investigations. Hollywood couldn't write this stuff.
Remember, California is simultaneously operating as a sanctuary state, providing taxpayer-funded health benefits to illegal immigrants, dealing with $1 billion in Medicaid payments that HHS deferred over what the department described as mind-blowingly extensive fraud, and sitting under federal investigation for election system irregularities.
The personal nature of this vendetta is also something else. A California Assembly chief of staff reportedly distributed messages mocking Shirley's body. Real professional behavior from public servants spending your tax dollars.
Legal experts widely expect the law to face serious First Amendment challenges that could reach the Supreme Court. But that process takes time, and Democrats know it. While the courts sort things out, the chilling effect does its job, threatening criminal liability for reporters who dare document what's happening.
Newsom has presidential ambitions. Let that marinate. A man who wants to lead the entire country just signed legislation specifically designed to silence a single journalist who caught his state red-handed. The governor hid his tax returns behind a no-cameras viewing room and then criminalized the cameras themselves.
The legislation exists to stop Shirley. Shirley exists to stop the fraud. California voters will eventually need to pick a side. The rest of America is already watching very closely.
