Missouri Judge Hands Trump And GOP A Major Redistricting Win

A Missouri judge just killed a referendum attempt to overturn the state's new GOP congressional map.

Cole County Circuit Judge Daniel Green sided with Republican Secretary of State Denny Hoskins in a ruling that keeps a Trump-backed redistricting plan locked in for November's midterm elections. Green concluded that Missouri's referendum process simply cannot be used to contest congressional maps passed by the state Legislature, according to reports. That is a massive blow for Democrats who have been scrambling to undo mid-decade redistricting efforts across multiple red states, and losing nearly every single time.

Here's where it gets really juicy. The new map essentially carves up Kansas City and scatters its voters across Republican-heavy districts. Democratic Rep. Emanuel Cleaver's seat is the big target. His reconfigured 5th Congressional District now stretches deep into conservative rural territory, and an Associated Press analysis found that roughly 59% of voters in the redrawn district were never part of his old turf. Republican state Sen. Rick Brattin already locked up the GOP nomination there earlier this month, while Cleaver ran completely unopposed on the Democratic side.

Missouri currently sends six Republicans and two Democrats to Congress. If this map holds, that split could get even uglier for the blue team.

Plaintiff Richard von Glahn filed an appeal Wednesday evening, so this fight is far from over. But for now, the ruling stands, and the new boundaries were already in play during Missouri's August primaries.

The backstory is almost too political to be real. Trump personally encouraged GOP-controlled states to redraw their congressional lines before the 2026 midterms. Republican Gov. Mike Kehoe responded by calling legislators into a special session to cook up fresh boundaries. Missouri became only the second red state after Texas to take the plunge.

Opponents of the plan gathered thousands of signatures trying to force a statewide vote on the map. Hoskins shut that down, refusing to certify the petition by arguing the state constitution doesn't allow voters to challenge redistricting through referendums. Judge Green agreed completely and entered judgment for Hoskins.

And the Republican legal firepower behind this map was no joke. The Republican National Committee, National Republican Congressional Committee, and Missouri Republican State Committee all jumped into the case to defend the new boundaries.

This Missouri saga is just one chapter in a nationwide redistricting war with control of the narrowly divided House hanging in the balance. Democrats keep swinging, and Republicans keep connecting. Unless an appeals court flips Green's decision, these congressional lines will be the ones Missouri voters see on their ballots in November.

The political chess match continues, but right now, the GOP is sitting pretty in the Show Me State.
