Election workers in Milwaukee found themselves scrambling back to a central counting facility in the wee hours after discovering that five out of nine memory sticks delivered to the county courthouse contained absolutely zero vote tallies. Instead, those devices were loaded with audit logs. Somebody literally pressed the wrong button. That bombshell revelation, as first reported by Trending Politics, instantly set the internet ablaze with accusations and conspiracy theories.
Milwaukee Election Commission Director Paulina Gutierrez insisted the voting machines themselves were totally fine. The culprit? A worker who chose the incorrect option while transferring data onto the USB sticks. That one click triggered a full reprocessing of roughly 30,000 ballots and pushed final results well past 1 a.m.
Milwaukee County Clerk George Christenson finally announced the totals in the dead of night. Crowley grabbed 65,131 votes, capturing 43.04 percent. Francesca Hong came up short with 62,739 votes at 41.46 percent. A gap of just a few thousand votes in a race where tens of thousands of ballots had to be run through the system a second time.
You can imagine how that played online.
Critics pounced immediately, questioning how such a colossal screw-up could happen with something as simple as downloading files. The optics were absolutely brutal for a city that already carries a reputation for painfully slow vote counting on election nights.
Christenson tried to calm the storm, pointing to upcoming safeguards. He noted that a canvass would begin within days, which essentially functions as an audit. On top of that, Milwaukee conducts two additional voluntary audits. Three layers of review, he argued, should put concerns to rest.
But here is the political reality. No amount of promised audits can undo the damage of workers hauling memory sticks back and forth across town at midnight while the whole country watches. Wisconsin law already forces election workers into a tough spot by prohibiting any processing of absentee ballots before polls open. That means a massive pile of mail votes hits all at once on election night.
This particular disaster, though, had nothing to do with absentee ballot volume or state law. Officials flat out admitted that someone made a preventable mistake.
No official finding has emerged suggesting the error altered the outcome or that any ballots were intentionally tampered with. That is an important distinction.
Still, for a party already fighting an uphill battle against widespread voter distrust regarding how elections are administered, this kind of chaotic midnight scene is political poison. Sending workers back for replacement vote data, reprocessing thousands of ballots after midnight, and delivering final numbers while most voters are asleep is not exactly a confidence builder.
County officials maintain that their checks and balances will verify everything. But the bigger question looming over Milwaukee is painfully simple. Why does every election night end with voters wide awake, staring at the clock, wondering what on earth is going on behind closed doors?
