Milwaukee election workers clicked "Export Audit Log" five separate times on Tuesday night. They confirmed the prompt each time. Then they handed out USB drives containing the wrong data, causing over an hour of chaos while the entire state of Wisconsin sat around waiting for vote totals.
The Milwaukee Election Commission is calling it a simple mistake. But video footage obtained by reporter A.J. Bayatpour, as reported here, paints a very different picture. The screen literally displayed the words "Export Audit Log" in plain text at the top. A confirmation box popped up asking if they wanted to export audit data. Staff members clicked yes. Not once. Not twice. FIVE TIMES. And somehow nobody noticed until the damage was done.
Let that sink in. The city wants everyone to believe that five different people saw a screen telling them exactly what they were doing, confirmed it, and still had zero clue they were grabbing audit logs instead of vote totals. That's one heck of a story.
Here's where it gets really spicy. This marks the third consecutive election cycle where Milwaukee's central counting operation has produced a major screw up. Back in 2024, voting machine doors were discovered unsealed. In 2025, a ballot shortage popped up during a critical race. Now in 2026, the wrong button gets pushed repeatedly, producing an hour long delay. Three years running. Three different problems. All from the same Democrat controlled city that consistently turns in its numbers dead last, after every other part of Wisconsin has already reported.
That pattern has critics fuming. The accusation that's been floating around for years is that Milwaukee waits to see how the rest of the state shakes out before submitting its totals. Tuesday's primary poured gasoline on those suspicions. Candidate Francesca Hong reportedly had a 20 point advantage heading into election night. She ended up losing by a razor thin 0.42 percent, fewer than 3,300 votes, once Milwaukee's delayed numbers finally rolled in.
State Rep. Scott Krug is now demanding a legislative investigation into the central count operation. He pointed out that Wisconsin remains one of just six states that prohibit absentee ballot processing before Election Day. Krug says he's willing to address that issue but noted it doesn't explain everything, pointing to ongoing personnel problems within Milwaukee's counting setup.
And then there's the FBI angle. Conservative radio host Dan O'Donnell publicly tagged the FBI on social media, urging them to look into what happened Tuesday night. Talk of a federal investigation is now circulating.
As the famous Ian Fleming line goes, once is happenstance, twice is coincidence, three times is enemy action. Milwaukee is sitting squarely at number three.
The Senate is currently on vacation. November is just 84 days away. And Milwaukee's election commission has some very serious explaining to do.
