The guy who made crawling through sewers on television look dignified just did something even harder: he responded to 7,600 furious internet comments without losing his cool. As USA Journal reported, Mike Rowe, the beloved Dirty Jobs host and vocational education champion, posted a clip of Bill Maher roasting Democrats for rolling out the welcome mat for actual communists. Maher declared he would never cast a ballot for someone who believes the wrong side prevailed in the Cold War. Seems reasonable enough, right? Not according to the internet.
Rowe tacked on a pretty mild suggestion: maybe Democrats should vocally reject an ideology with, shall we say, a less than stellar track record. You know, the one responsible for roughly 100 million deaths. Just a thought! Well, 7,600 people absolutely lost their minds, and Rowe, apparently with nothing better planned for his afternoon, decided to systematically dismantle every single argument thrown his way.
First up was Shelley, who helpfully reminded him that socialism and communism are totally different things. Rowe's comeback was chef's kiss level good. He pointed out that the DSA candidates in question are openly calling for the complete destruction of capitalism, free markets, representative government, property rights, borders, police, prisons, and the Constitution. So yeah, call it whatever flavor you want, the destination looks pretty familiar.
Then Tracey showed up to accuse him of living in a 1950s Red Scare fantasy. Rowe calmly noted that he is not the one throwing around the C word. The director of the NYC Mayor's Office literally said they need to elect more communists. A DSA member named Mamdani tweeted directly from the Communist Manifesto. Rowe was simply quoting people who are very proud of their own labels.
Someone named John Engles tried the classic "but Trump is basically a Nazi" deflection. Rowe made the painfully obvious observation that Trump actively rejects that characterization, while DSA communists are enthusiastically slapping that label on themselves and wearing it like a varsity jacket.
But the most brutal takedown belonged to Beto Ojeda, who pulled out the McCarthyism card. Rowe absolutely torched this comparison. McCarthy hauled private citizens before Congress, demanded loyalty oaths, and ruined lives with baseless accusations. Today's DSA communists are running for office with gubernatorial endorsements, appearing on cable news to proudly confirm their platform, and winning primary elections. Nobody is persecuting them. Voters are literally choosing them. Invoking McCarthy to defend people who are voluntarily and publicly embracing communism is not clever. It is a historical category error of epic proportions.
Rowe wrapped things up with an argument so clean it could hang in every campaign office nationwide. If Democrats distance themselves from the communist wing and say their tent has limits, they earn credibility with independents. If they refuse, then November becomes incredibly simple: one party that rejects communism versus one that does not. He explicitly stated he is not rooting for that outcome and would prefer a functioning Democratic Party that considers America fundamentally good. Given the current situation unfolding in Michigan, that wish might go unfulfilled.
