Mike Johnson Claims GOP Will Grow Its House Majority In Midterms

Speaker Mike Johnson says he is totally convinced Republicans will expand their congressional majority in November.

The Louisiana Republican made the bold declaration during a campaign swing through Virginia's 2nd Congressional District on Monday, according to reports. This comes despite widespread predictions from political analysts that the GOP could lose the House and possibly the Senate, given Trump's slumping poll numbers tied to the Iran conflict and soaring gas prices.

But Johnson is not sweating any of that. Not one bit.

He framed the upcoming election as a stark binary for voters, calling it a showdown between "common sense and crazy." He went even further, warning that the alternative path leads toward what he labeled the "dark, dangerous, deadly road to communism," a clear shot at progressive socialists gaining influence within the Democratic Party.

The Speaker revealed he is currently grinding through a 30 day nonstop campaign blitz, hitting 34 congressional districts spread across 18 states. That is a grueling schedule designed to shore up vulnerable Republican incumbents and boost newcomers.

"We have extraordinary people running," Johnson declared.

His Virginia stop was all about Rep. Jen Kiggans, who is gearing up for a rematch against former Democratic Rep. Elaine Luria. Kiggans knocked off Luria back in 2022, but a Democratic survey from July showed the two locked in a dead heat. That makes this district one of the hottest battlegrounds in the entire country.

Johnson heaped praise on Kiggans, calling her among the most bipartisan and effective members on Capitol Hill. He highlighted her resume as a former Navy helicopter pilot and geriatric nurse practitioner.

Kiggans herself threw punches at Luria, accusing her opponent of raking in $21 million through insider stock trades and then hypocritically claiming to oppose the practice. She also pointed out that Luria does not even reside in the district.

But perhaps the juiciest part of the whole event came when reporters brought up recent remarks from House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Jeffries had publicly distanced himself from the Democratic Socialists of America's platform, opposing proposals like Medicare for All.

Johnson pounced on that like a cat on a laser pointer.

"It's a fascinating thing to see," he said. "The Democratic Party is in the midst of an open civil war right now." He argued that even if Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer claim they reject the DSA agenda, they would still need those far left members to pass any legislation if Democrats regain power.

The Speaker also announced that House Republicans launched a new website over the weekend, contrastforamerica.com, specifically built to spotlight policy differences between the two parties.

So there you have it. While the polls say one thing, Johnson is betting everything on the opposite outcome. Either he knows something the rest of Washington doesn't, or this is the most aggressive game of political poker we have seen in years.
