Melania Trump just dropped $2 million in scholarship money on foster care kids. The First Lady stepped into the Rose Garden on Thursday to reveal a massive expansion of her Fostering the Future program, and she did it with an IndyCar parked right next to her among the flowers.
The rarely seen First Lady kicked things off with a quip that had the audience cracking up. "I heard you missed me. Here I am!" she told the crowd, according to reports. For someone who typically avoids the spotlight, she sure knows how to command a room.
Let's talk about the outfit, because obviously. She rocked a sky-blue oversized Michael Kors shirt featuring a raised collar, paired with a bright red Dior pencil skirt and red suede Manolo Blahnik pumps. The whole ensemble was basically a walking American flag. Red, white, and blue from head to toe. Patriotic fashion at its absolute finest.
But the real showstopper wasn't the designer threads. It was the red, white, and blue IndyCar sitting in the Rose Garden, branded with logos for her BE BEST and Fostering the Future programs. "Look at this incredible race car," she told attendees. "Gorgeous and powerful." Same could be said about that entrance.
The vehicle showed up just days before IndyCar drivers will blaze through Washington, D.C. for the Freedom 250 Grand Prix. Six-time series champion Scott Dixon was on hand, alongside 2016 Indy 500 victor Alexander Rossi plus drivers Graham Rahal and Scott McLaughlin. IndyCar President Doug Boles revealed that competitors will hit speeds north of 180 mph while zooming past the Capitol, Washington Monument, and National Mall. He called it a "massive and very fast spectacle" tied to America's 250th birthday celebration.
Now for the substance behind all the glitz. Fox Corporation and IndyCar each pledged $1 million to create scholarships at Indiana University and Purdue University. That combined $2 million commitment brings the Fostering the Future scholarship network to 26 colleges and universities nationwide. The program gives young people aging out of foster care a real shot at building independent, successful lives.
And here's the feel-good moment of the day. Trump announced that one scholarship recipient just became the program's very first doctor this spring. "He will change the lives of so many people," she said. "Graduates will build new companies, launch new industries and redefine what is possible for all Americans."
The First Lady also delivered some lines that honestly belong on a motivational poster. "The greatest investment America can make is not in technology, infrastructure or capital markets. It's our children," she declared. She followed that up with another gem. "Education is the one asset that can never be taken away. It is the foundation upon which confidence is built, opportunities created and the future is invented."
So there you have it. An IndyCar in the Rose Garden, designer pumps on the lawn, and millions flowing toward kids who need it most. Only in Washington.
