Luigi Mangione confessed in open court to shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson dead.

The 28-year-old stood before a Manhattan federal judge on Friday and read from a prepared letter, dropping a bombshell admission while the victim's widow wept quietly just feet away. "I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan and he died," Mangione stated, as reported from inside the courtroom. The slain executive's family members fixed their eyes on him with visible fury.

Mangione walked into the courtroom wearing a beige prison jumpsuit layered over a white long-sleeved shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. His wrists were free but his ankles remained in shackles. Thompson's widow and other relatives occupied the second row, watching every move as Mangione sat down, reviewed documents, and signed paperwork alongside his legal team.

His attorney Karen Agnifilo addressed Judge Margaret Garnett directly, confirming her client was ready to enter a guilty plea to the full indictment. And just like that, the federal trial that was supposed to kick off in January was over before it started.

Mangione had been facing two counts of interstate stalking resulting in death, each one carrying a potential life sentence. Notably, the federal case never included a murder charge. But here is where things get really spicy for Mangione's legal future. He still has an entirely separate state prosecution hanging over his head, including charges of second-degree murder, possession of a forged instrument, and multiple weapons charges. Jury selection for that trial is set to begin on September 8.

Judge Garnett made sure Mangione understood something critical. Any prison time from the state case could potentially be stacked on top of whatever federal sentence he receives. That is a massive amount of time behind bars potentially awaiting this guy.

The guilty plea represents a dramatic shift for someone who has attracted a bizarre and unsettling fan following since Thompson was gunned down outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel back in December 2024. Yes, you read that correctly. Adoring fangirls have been swooning over an accused killer.

Federal prosecutors painted a chilling picture of premeditation. They accused the Maryland prep school graduate of tracking Thompson, a 50-year-old father of two, before executing him on a sidewalk outside the company's annual investor conference. Mangione then fled, triggering a five-day nationwide manhunt that ended in the most American way possible. Police nabbed him eating breakfast at a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

Authorities recovered a written manifesto expressing deep hostility toward the health insurance industry. Prosecutors argued Mangione wanted to "rebel against the deadly, greed-fueled health insurance cartel." Shell casings found at the crime scene were inscribed with the words "delay" and "deny," terms that critics have long associated with insurance company tactics for rejecting customer claims.

The state trial is coming up fast. September 8 could bring even more courtroom fireworks.
