Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear showed up at the National Urban League's annual conference in Nashville on Friday and delivered what might be the least subtle hint about running for president since someone invented the wink emoji. As Trending Politics reported, the Democratic governor all but confirmed he's eyeing a 2028 White House campaign, stopping just short of printing yard signs on stage.
Beshear was sharing the spotlight with former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who is also apparently circling the same calendar date like a hungry vulture over a political carcass. The two were at the event discussing race and urban policy issues, because nothing says "I'm definitely not running for president" like appearing at a national conference alongside another guy who's definitely also running for president.
The best part came when somebody asked Beshear what qualities the next commander in chief should possess. Instead of giving a boring policy answer, the governor decided to tell a cute little story about his 2023 reelection night. He said he walked off that victory stage, turned to his wife, and told her he'd never have to campaign again. Then he paused and basically admitted, yeah, that turned out to be a lie.
He went on to say he refuses to leave a broken country to his children or anybody else's kids, which is a very noble sentiment and also happens to be on page one of the "How To Sound Presidential" handbook. He also threw in a preemptive disclaimer for anyone hoping he'd be some kind of liberal mirror image of Donald Trump, saying that's simply not who he is, and he's perfectly fine with that.
When the interviewer pointed out that it sure sounds like Beshear has January 20th, 2029 circled on his wall calendar with a big red marker, the governor responded with a casual "Maybe so." That's political speak for "I've already picked out my Oval Office curtains."
This flirtation with the presidency has been going on for quite a while now. After winning reelection in 2023, his name got thrown around as a potential running mate for the 2024 Democratic presidential ticket. He currently serves as chair of the Democratic Governors Association, where he's been helping gubernatorial candidates ahead of the 2026 midterms, noting that winning those races could reshape the electoral landscape down the road.
And if you're still not convinced he's running, consider this: the man has been traveling to early primary and caucus states like South Carolina, attending party functions and talking about national issues. He also popped up at the National Action Network convention, where he made similar comments about keeping his options open.
So to summarize, Andy Beshear is definitely not running for president, except for all the ways in which he is very obviously running for president. Stay tuned for the shocking announcement that will surprise absolutely nobody.
