New York's governor just threw $7.25 million at legal defense for roughly 1,400 migrant children facing deportation.

Kathy Hochul stood at a Manhattan press conference flanked by New York City's socialist mayor Zohran Mamdani and Attorney General Letitia James, as reported here, and proudly unveiled the massive spending commitment. The state funds will cover attorneys for undocumented minors going through removal proceedings. And when a journalist posted about it online, Hochul fired back with a two word reply that set the internet ablaze. "Damn right I did."

Let that sink in. Not a carefully worded statement from her communications team. Not a nuanced policy explanation. Just pure, unfiltered swagger about spending taxpayer cash on people who crossed into the country illegally.

Here's the backstory. The Trump administration let its contract with about 100 legal aid providers who served migrant children across the nation expire back in July. The feds pulled out. Hochul immediately swooped in with her state checkbook, grabbing dollars collected from hardworking New York families and businesses to fill that gap. No vote in the legislature. No public debate. Just executive action and a social media victory lap.

She posted it on official government accounts like she was flexing a championship ring.

Now, there IS a federal law behind all this. The Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2008, signed during the Bush administration, mandates legal representation for undocumented minors at deportation hearings. That law already exists. What Hochul did was pile an additional $7.25 million in state money on top of whatever federal funding still remains.

Meanwhile, regular New Yorkers watching their school budgets shrink, their infrastructure crumble, and their own legal bills pile up are left wondering one very simple thing. When does the state drop $7 million to help American citizens navigate a legal system that's equally expensive and equally capable of destroying lives?

The political math here is crystal clear. This spending is a giant neon signal to the progressive activist base that New York will fight federal immigration enforcement with every available dollar. The messaging matters more to these politicians than the actual budget numbers.

And let's not forget the delicious irony. The Biden era Office of Refugee Resettlement managed to lose track of 320,000 migrant children under its watch. Some of those kids were trafficked. Others wound up in forced labor situations. The very same system that catastrophically failed to protect these children is now getting a retroactive funding boost from Albany.

Hochul isn't apologizing. She isn't explaining. She isn't even pretending to be conflicted about prioritizing non citizens over the taxpayers footing the bill. She's bragging.

"Damn right I did."

That kind of arrogance is truly something to behold. New York voters are picking up the tab for this political grandstanding, and come November, they'll have a chance to decide whether their governor is spending their money to help them or actively working against their interests.
