Kamala Harris just called for overhauling the Electoral College, packing the Supreme Court, and granting statehood to Puerto Rico and D.C.
The former Vice President dropped these bombshells at the National Urban League Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, according to reports, and the political world is absolutely buzzing. No formal 2028 campaign announcement has been made, but the timing of these remarks has everyone reading between the lines.
Harris openly acknowledged the explosive nature of her own proposals. She told the crowd she knew her words would be controversial, especially coming from her. She then laid out her vision, calling for a 13 justice Supreme Court to mirror the 13 federal district courts, a fresh look at eliminating the Electoral College, and statehood for both Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C., if residents want it.
Here is where it gets really juicy. These positions are a major shift from what Harris ran on in 2024. During that campaign against Donald Trump, she never advocated scrapping the Electoral College. She supported term limits and ethics rules for justices, not expanding the bench. And while she backed D.C. statehood back then, Puerto Rico was not part of her platform.
So what changed? Well, she lost the 2024 election to Trump, and critics were quick to point out a familiar pattern. They noted that Democrats always seem eager to rewrite the rules after taking a loss at the ballot box.
Harris also took aim at federal judicial nominees during her speech, arguing that anyone who intentionally misleads the Senate Judiciary Committee should face consequences, including potential contempt of Congress charges. Bold swing.
Behind the scenes, the former VP has been making interesting phone calls. She recently chatted with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani about the Democratic Party's future and held a separate sit down earlier this year with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez in Chicago. Those conversations have party insiders talking nonstop.
When asked directly about a 2028 run, Harris played it cool. She told attendees she has not made a decision and insisted she is completely focused on the upcoming midterm elections. But early polling from RealClearPolitics tells a different story. Harris is leading Democratic primary surveys over heavy hitters like California Governor Gavin Newsom, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and Ocasio Cortez herself.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Party's internal drama continues on another front. Liberal New York Times columnist Michelle Goldberg torched the DNC's long delayed 2024 election autopsy report, calling it mysterious, anticlimactic, and ridiculous. Goldberg wrote that the document was kept hidden not because it was politically sensitive but because it is a disaster. She slammed its complete lack of substance and noted that the words Israel and Gaza appear nowhere in the 192 page report. She also called out DNC Chairman Ken Martin for flip flopping on releasing it.
The road to abolishing the Electoral College or expanding the court would require enormous congressional support and possibly a constitutional amendment. In other words, these proposals face near impossible odds. But Harris clearly is not worried about playing it safe anymore.
