You absolutely cannot make this stuff up, folks. A federal judge in Florida dropped dead just hours after Congress officially filed impeachment articles against him. The timing is jaw-dropping.
Senior U.S. District Judge John E. Steele, based out of Fort Myers, passed away under circumstances that remain completely unknown as of now. Sources confirmed his death to WINK News anchor Claire Galt. Here is the wildest part. Just hours earlier, U.S. Rep. Greg Steube had announced that impeachment articles were officially filed against Steele for what lawmakers called a blatant abuse of judicial authority.
So what exactly did this judge do that got Congress so fired up? Buckle in.
Steele commanded ICE agents to cut loose a convicted aircraft pirate named Maikel Guerra Morales. Yes, you read that correctly. Aircraft pirate. Morales is a Cuban national who helped hijack a commuter plane back in 2003, forcing the pilot to reroute the aircraft to Key West, Florida. His big plan? Getting into America by any means necessary. Federal prosecutors nailed him, and he got slapped with 22 years behind bars.
After Morales finally completed that lengthy prison sentence, ICE grabbed him and started working on kicking him out of the country. But things got complicated. Morales filed a Convention Against Torture claim, arguing he would face serious harm or even death if shipped back to Cuba. That type of claim requires a migrant to prove they would likely be tortured upon returning home.
ICE released Morales in 2023 under supervised conditions, according to Steele's own ruling dated July 8. Then agents arrested him again in December 2025 with plans to send him packing to Mexico. Steele noted that Morales had followed every term of his supervision.
The judge ruled that ICE held Morales for over half a year without presenting any concrete deportation strategy, which he argued violated a Supreme Court decision from 2001. Steele pointed out that the agency never even showed proof it contacted Mexico about accepting Morales. So the judge ordered his release under federal supervision, while leaving the door open for ICE to grab him again if deportation became realistically possible.
Rep. Steube was absolutely not having it. He blasted the ruling as dangerous activist overreach that endangered American communities. Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis piled on, calling Morales a "criminal illegal alien" and slamming the decision to put a convicted plane hijacker back on American streets.
Steele had been serving on the federal bench in Florida's Middle District for 36 years, originally appointed by President Bill Clinton.
Now the impeachment proceedings are essentially moot because the judge is gone. The cause of his death remains a total mystery, and nobody in an official capacity has offered any explanation. Politics in America continues to be absolutely bonkers.
