A 30-year-old lawyer who has never tried a single case just defeated a veteran judge with over a decade on the bench.
Destiny Alvarez, a Coral Gables attorney whose legal career spans a whopping five years, knocked off 65-year-old Miami-Dade Judge Mavel Ruiz in one of the spiciest judicial elections Florida has seen in ages. The race, as Conservative Brief reported, drew massive attention because of Ruiz's controversial ruling involving Donald Trump's presidential library.
Unofficial tallies showed Alvarez grabbing 50.51% of ballots compared to Ruiz's 49.49%. Over 224,000 people voted in this thing. That margin is thinner than a gas station napkin, but a win is a win.
Now let's talk about what made this race so delicious. Ruiz had previously blocked the transfer of downtown Miami property from Miami Dade College to Trump's presidential library. She ruled that the college's Board of Trustees hadn't given the public enough chance to weigh in before voting on the deal. Pretty standard judicial stuff, right?
Well, here's where it gets good. After the trustees held another vote, Ruiz actually lifted her own order and dismissed the lawsuit, clearing the path for the library transfer. So the whole thing resolved itself. But the damage was done. Prominent Trump allies were reportedly furious and started pouring money into efforts to remove her from the bench.
And then came the hug. Oh, the hug.
The college's Board of Trustees successfully got Ruiz disqualified from any future litigation involving the presidential library, arguing her behavior raised impartiality concerns. Their star exhibit? Ruiz apparently embraced historian Marvin Dunn, the plaintiff who had challenged the land deal, right after a court hearing. The college pointed to that warm judicial cuddle as evidence of personal bias.

What turned a sleepy local judicial contest into a nationally watched showdown was the flood of outside political cash. Florida judicial races are technically nonpartisan, which is the kind of legal fiction that makes lawyers giggle into their briefcases. This race became about as nonpartisan as a campaign rally.
Alvarez, for her part, expressed deep gratitude toward Miami-Dade voters for trusting her with the position. She acknowledged during her campaign that she has zero trial experience, whether before a jury or a judge. Her background centers on civil litigation, insurance disputes, and the thrilling world of homeowners association and condominium law.
So to recap, a judge who blocked a presidential library, then unblocked it, then hugged a plaintiff, just got replaced by someone whose biggest courtroom battles have involved HOA violations.
