And Thune just handed Republican voters a full month to stew over every single thing he failed to accomplish.

Show everyone how responsible you are by refusing to govern when governing gets uncomfortable. Then watch Democrats waltz in, torch every norm you protected, and wonder why your base stopped showing up.
Democrats return on September 8. If the legislative sprint after that produces nothing meaningful, this recess will become the defining chapter of Thune's tenure as Majority Leader. He had the votes. He had presidential backing. He had overwhelming public support. He had a narrow window to protect election integrity.
And he chose his couch instead. The Republican base noticed, and they are absolutely finished playing nice about it.
