Julian Epstein, the guy who literally served as press secretary for First Lady Jill Biden, just publicly announced he's crossing party lines and voting Republican in Michigan's Senate race. Not quietly, either. He wrote an entire op-ed in the New York Post explaining every single reason why, and the fallout is spectacular.
This veteran Democratic strategist didn't just switch his vote. He's also opening his wallet for GOP Senate candidate Mike Rogers. Let that sink in for a moment. A longtime party insider is now financially supporting the opposition. If that doesn't send chills through Democratic headquarters, nothing will.
Epstein's critique of his own party reads like an autopsy report. He argues that Democrats aren't simply drifting toward Scandinavian socialism. Instead, he says they've embraced a nihilistic, deconstructionist ideology that wants to abolish prisons, police forces, national borders, military spending, the Senate, the presidency, the Supreme Court, and free market capitalism. He goes even further, claiming this worldview sympathizes with genocidal jihadist organizations like Hamas.
And who's at the center of this political earthquake? Michigan's Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed. According to Epstein, El-Sayed provided cover for terrorist attacks targeting Jewish synagogues and rejects Israel's right to exist. It gets juicier. El-Sayed's top campaign surrogate, Hasan Piker, reportedly places blame on America for the September 11 attacks, has praised Mao Zedong, and celebrated Hamas following October 7.
So what did Democratic leadership do about all this? Basically nothing useful, according to Epstein. Chuck Schumer offered hollow "big tent" talking points. The DCCC tried intervening but failed. Congresswoman Debbie Dingell pledged to endorse every candidate on the ticket regardless. Epstein views all of this as cowardly capitulation.
Now here's where the math gets absolutely terrifying for Democrats. Former Clinton pollster Mark Penn estimated that around 5% of supporters who backed El-Sayed's primary opponent, Rep. Haley Stevens, could flip to Rogers in November. Given that El-Sayed squeaked through his primary by just a single point, even a tiny defection from mainstream Democrats could be enough to hand Rogers the seat.
Epstein isn't alone in this rebellion, either. A grassroots "Democrats for Mike Rogers" movement has popped up on X, featuring voters who previously pulled the lever for Obama, Hillary Clinton, Biden, and Kamala Harris. These folks are now publicly declaring they cannot support El-Sayed. Black voters, Jewish voters, rural communities, and suburban moderates are all apparently rethinking their loyalty.
Epstein's parting message to party strategists is basically a flashing red siren. He warns that as blue collar Americans abandon what he calls a toxic Democratic brand, the party's willingness to accommodate anti-American extremists will trigger massive losses nationwide and spark a brutal internal civil war.
That civil war? It looks like it already kicked off. And Julian Epstein just lobbed one of the biggest grenades from inside the building.
