Melissa L. Farris is sitting in custody facing up to 20 years behind bars for spray painting the World War II Memorial.
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro came out swinging on Friday morning, filing two felony counts against Farris, as reported here. The charges are Depredation Against Property of the United States and Destruction of Veterans' Memorials. Each one alone could land Farris in prison for a full decade.
The graffiti scrawled on one of the National Mall's most revered monuments read "Clean Hands Dirty $." We're talking about a site that honors more than 16 million Americans who served in the Second World War and over 407,000 who never came home alive.
Pirro did not hold back when announcing the charges. She called the act "a despicable attack on a sacred monument" and then made it deeply personal, revealing that her own father and grandfather were among those who served. That is not just a prosecutor talking. That is someone with skin in the game.
President Trump fired off his own response on Truth Social, writing in his trademark all caps style. He called the vandalism one of the greatest insults possible to fallen American heroes. He also referenced previous attacks on the Reflecting Pool near the Lincoln Memorial and vowed authorities were hunting down those responsible. "Where do these animals come from???" he wrote.
Here is where things get really spicy. Pirro recently caught heat from Trump himself after she dropped vandalism charges against Olympic canoeist David Hearn related to the Reflecting Pool incidents. Trump publicly torched her for the decision, saying she "folded like an umbrella." The two reportedly met at the White House following that very public callout. Now, just a short time later, Pirro rolls out felony charges against Farris. The timing is certainly interesting.
This vandalism is not happening in a vacuum. The WWII Memorial tagging is part of a growing pattern of attacks on iconic national monuments. The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has been targeted on multiple occasions. Burn marks spelling out "86 47" were scorched into the grass nearby. This is looking less like random troublemaking and more like a deliberate campaign against America's most symbolic landmarks.
Let's be real about what got defaced here. The memorial honors working class young men from small towns, farms, and factory floors who shipped overseas to fight fascism. Hundreds of thousands of them came back in flag covered coffins. Countless others never returned at all. Slapping anti-capitalist graffiti on their monument while their families are still alive is not some bold political statement. It is an act of pure disrespect.
Farris is locked up. The charges are severe. And Pirro appears to have gotten the message that leniency is not going to fly when it comes to trashing war memorials. Two felony counts and the possibility of a decade per charge should make the next person think twice before picking up a spray can anywhere near the National Mall.
