President Trump just handed JD Vance yet another to-do item, and the vice president is already rolling up his sleeves like a guy who actually enjoys group projects. Vance teamed up with the Labor Department's inspector general on Wednesday to announce a fresh investigation into alleged work visa abuse by foreign nationals, because apparently the fraud has gotten so out of control that someone finally decided to look into it.
Speaking at an anti-fraud gathering in Milwaukee, Vance declared that dozens of subpoenas have already been fired off, all in the name of making sure American jobs actually go to, you know, Americans and not "foreign fraudsters." Revolutionary concept, apparently.
Labor Department Inspector General Anthony D'Esposito told reporters that these alleged scams have drained hundreds of millions of dollars from the U.S. medical industry alone, with the damage spreading into other employment sectors too. Even more disturbing, some of these operations allegedly involve forced labor networks and human trafficking organizations. So we're not exactly talking about minor paperwork mix-ups here.
The inspector general's office has already pulled back the curtain on schemes where employers and labor brokers filed bogus applications, squeezed foreign workers through coercive wage kickback arrangements, and basically flooded the labor market with below-wage workers to undercut Americans. Department of Homeland Security reviews have found that roughly 21 percent of H-1B petitions contained fraudulent elements. One in five. Let that marinate.
D'Esposito connected the dots even further, saying this visa fraud is linked to cartels and transnational gangs. He pointed out that these aren't just people toiling away in warehouses. Some are working in medical facilities and doctors' offices, which is the kind of detail that really makes you feel great about your next checkup.
Vance explained that the H-1B program was originally designed for genuinely brilliant tech workers, scientists, and physicians who could contribute their expertise in America. Noble idea. But in practice, he said, big corporations and overseas scammers have hijacked the whole thing to suppress wages for American employees. Vance essentially told the Milwaukee crowd that the administration's message is simple: game the system, and you're not getting through the door.
For context, the H-1B visa lets U.S. companies bring in foreign specialists for roles requiring advanced knowledge and at least a bachelor's degree. The PERM labor certification process serves as the gateway for many seeking permanent residency through employer sponsorship. According to Pew Research Center data, about 73 percent of H-1B recipients hail from India, more than half hold master's degrees, and the biggest chunk work in computer programming, software development, and related tech fields.
The usual suspects, Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Apple, rank among the top employers using the program. California, Texas, New York, Illinois, and Washington gobble up the most approved petitions. And the peak? A whopping 442,425 approved H-1B petitions in 2022 under Biden. So yeah, maybe an audit was slightly overdue.
