Michigan's Senate race just exploded into one of the ugliest political moments of 2026, and it all started with a grown man dragging three little kids into the spotlight for no good reason.
Abdul El-Sayed, who is running for Senate in Michigan, decided during a podcast interview to go after Vice President JD Vance's children. Not his policies. Not his voting record. His actual children. As USA Journal reported, El-Sayed suggested that Vance would eventually need to explain to his own kids why they supposedly are not as American as everyone else. He literally said Vance "made your career hating people who are different" and would face "a really awkward conversation" with his "brown kids."
Let that sink in. These children are seven, five, and three years old. They cannot spell "Senate," let alone participate in a political debate. Yet a candidate for one of the most powerful offices in the country thought using them as rhetorical ammunition was perfectly acceptable.
Vance responded on Fox News over the weekend, and honestly, he kept it way more restrained than most people would. He called El-Sayed "crazy" and said he would make "a terrible senator for the people of Michigan." He also labeled him "kind of an odd guy" who resorts to personal attacks rather than explaining how he would actually improve life for voters. That is remarkably calm for a father whose toddlers just got publicly weaponized.
But here is where this story gets even juicier. Attacking the VP's kids is apparently not even the most self-destructive thing El-Sayed has done recently. In a separate interview, the man who wants to represent Michigan told an audience that he has always despised Mackinac Island. Yes, that Mackinac Island. The iconic landmark that doubles as the governor's summer residence and one of the most beloved destinations in the entire state. "Every time I've ever come here, I've hated it," he said on camera, seemingly forgetting that recordings are permanent.
Meanwhile, Republican opponent Mike Rogers is sitting back and watching this implosion with a bowl of popcorn. Rogers pointed out that most Michigan residents consider El-Sayed far too extreme for the job.
The numbers back that up too. CNN analyst Harry Enten noted that El-Sayed lost every single one of the 15 Michigan counties with the lowest percentage of college graduates. His primary victory was powered almost entirely by college towns and progressive activist networks, leaving him with virtually zero appeal among working class voters who typically decide statewide elections.
So let us recap the situation. This candidate publicly questioned whether the VP's small children are truly American, announced his hatred for Michigan's most famous tourist destination, and built a coalition that ignores the very voters he needs in November. That is quite a strategy.
Those three little kids never asked to become political props. Michigan voters will get their chance to weigh in this fall, and something tells us El-Sayed is going to wish he had kept their names out of his mouth.
