An election analyst projects Vice President JD Vance would obliterate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in a 2028 presidential matchup.
The projection, which was recently released by the popular forecaster known as Election Time, lays out a brutal 339 to 199 electoral college beatdown that would mark the ugliest Democratic loss since Michael Dukakis got demolished back in 1988. We're talking worse than Hillary Clinton's 2016 faceplant and even uglier than Kamala Harris's 2024 showing.
So how does AOC end up getting steamrolled this badly? Let's dig into the juicy details.
The analyst flat out called her nomination a Republican fantasy, saying she would be the easiest opponent the GOP could possibly hope for. And the betting markets seem to agree. Over on Kalshi, AOC currently sits at a 68 percent chance of pursuing the Democratic nomination, especially after she made headlines by announcing she was freezing her eggs, a move widely interpreted as clearing the path for a presidential campaign.
Vance starts with a fortress of 188 electoral votes spread across deep red territory, from Wyoming to Alabama to West Virginia. But here's where things get really ugly for Democrats. With AOC on the ticket, states that used to be competitive become total blowouts. Ohio shifts into the rock solid column after Trump's 11 point victory there in 2024. Iowa follows after a 13 point margin. Even Texas, which Democrats have been daydreaming about flipping for years, snaps firmly back into Republican hands.
Meanwhile, AOC's safe states are absolutely pathetic. The West Coast, Hawaii, Vermont, Massachusetts, Maryland, and D.C. give her a measly 98 electoral votes. She can't even break triple digits in her safe column. That's humiliating.
The analyst pinpointed the core problem with surgical precision. AOC is simply too progressive. She's basically Bernie Sanders 2.0, and nominating her would send moderate voters sprinting toward Vance, essentially gift wrapping every swing state for Republicans.
The former Blue Wall? Gone. Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania all lean red for Vance after consecutive Trump victories and years of rightward movement in the Midwest. The analyst warned that this shift toward Republicans in the region shows zero signs of slowing down.
But the real gut punch for Democrats comes with the flips. Minnesota, which has voted blue for 56 consecutive years, falls to Vance thanks to his Midwestern appeal and AOC's total disconnect with heartland voters. New Hampshire tilts red. Virginia, which has been trending competitive since Glenn Youngkin's 2021 gubernatorial victory, becomes the third state to flip into Vance's column.
When the dust settles, AOC limps to 199 electoral votes, never even crossing the 200 mark. Vance cruises to 339 and the presidency.
The takeaway here is pretty clear. Progressive purity might win Twitter applause and coastal primaries, but when it meets actual swing state voters, it gets absolutely demolished. If Democrats hand their nomination to their most left wing voice, they might as well start writing Vance's inauguration speech themselves.
