Once confirmed, Clayton will become the permanent boss of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, which means he gets to babysit 18 different spy agencies. That sounds like a management nightmare that would make even the most seasoned corporate HR director weep into their coffee.
President Trump tapped Clayton back on June 11, just a few weeks after Tulsi Gabbard stepped down from the DNI gig. And naturally, the announcement came with all the subtlety of a Times Square billboard. Trump called Clayton "very Highly Respected" and rattled off his resume like a proud dad reading a college acceptance letter. Former SEC Chairman? Check. Former boss at Sullivan & Cromwell, which Trump described as one of the planet's most prominent law firms? Check. Current U.S. Attorney for Manhattan's Southern District? Also check. The man collects prestigious titles like baseball cards.
Trump also threw in a gentle nudge to senators, encouraging them to confirm Clayton "as soon as possible." Because nothing speeds up Senate proceedings like asking nicely.
The Senate Intelligence Committee held a confirmation hearing on July 15 after an earlier June session got pushed back, because apparently even confirmations need rain dates. The committee then advanced Clayton's nomination on July 21 by a razor thin 9 to 8 vote, once again split perfectly along party lines. Sensing a pattern here?
Senate Majority Leader John Thune sang Clayton's praises, calling him a "proven leader" during what he described as a "heightened threat environment." Thune also pointed out that Clayton oversaw terrorist prosecutions and helped draft the indictment against Venezuelan strongman Nicolas Maduro on drug trafficking and terrorism charges. So the guy has been busy.
Meanwhile, Intelligence Committee Chairman Tom Cotton described Clayton as someone possessing "deep experience combating a wide range of national security threats," which is politician speak for "we really like this guy."
Clayton has been running the Southern District of New York since April 2025, initially on an interim basis. Federal judges in the district gave him the thumbs up to keep going in August 2025. His office has tackled everything from national security cases to drug trafficking prosecutions during that stretch.
A spokesperson previously confirmed that Clayton planned to keep wearing his U.S. Attorney hat right up until the Senate made his intelligence gig official. Because why hold one incredibly demanding federal position when you can juggle two?
