Turns out the friendly skies just got a whole lot less friendly if you happen to be in the country without proper documentation. Federal immigration agents have been scooping up travelers at airports across the nation this month, nabbing folks at departure gates, on jet bridges, and even near those overpriced terminal gift shops where nobody actually buys anything. As Conservative Brief reported, the Trump administration is pushing toward a target of 2,000 immigration arrests every single day, and apparently airports are the hot new venue.
The strategy is part of a larger ICE effort to cast a wider net, including cracking down on people whose visas have expired. One attorney named Joe Moravec told CNN that his client, a woman who had entered the country legally and was seeking asylum, got detained at a D.C. area airport while literally trying to fly to Texas for her father's funeral. She is currently being held in Virginia. Moravec also said another client of his got picked up at Chicago's airport, someone who was also legally present in the U.S. and is now sitting in ICE custody.
Meanwhile, border czar Tom Homan keeps insisting that agents are only going after criminal illegal aliens and people who got ordered by an immigration judge to leave but decided to stick around anyway. He also pointed out that plenty of foreign nationals overstay their visas and just never bother departing.
A DHS spokesperson laid it out pretty clearly, telling CNN that this administration wants to make sure undocumented individuals can only board a plane if it is taking them out of the country. No pleasure trips to Cancun for you!
Jeff Joseph, who heads the American Immigration Lawyers Association, called the whole airport approach a "mousetrap" with "cheese," referring to people in the immigration process getting nabbed when they show up to fly. He noted that cooperation between TSA and ICE at this level is completely unprecedented. If the new rule is that having a pending application means you cannot travel domestically, he said that would be an entirely novel development.
Senior DHS officials did adjust their enforcement operations after two fatal shootings involving ICE officers this month. One happened in Houston, the other in Maine, and both started with traffic stops where ICE says the suspects tried to hit officers with their vehicles. Courts have consistently ruled that vehicles can be considered deadly weapons.
So why airports specifically? Former acting ICE director under Obama, John Sandweg, explained the logic perfectly. TSA already collects passenger data before flights, so authorities know exactly who is coming and when. Everyone has been screened for weapons. The targets basically deliver themselves to a secure location. You need fewer agents, and nobody is armed. It is, as Sandweg put it, about finding the fastest and easiest path to making arrests when you are under pressure to boost numbers.
Fun fact: Obama deported so many people during his tenure that he earned the nickname "Deporter in Chief." So this whole concept is not exactly brand new, but immigration attorneys say the frequency at airports has skyrocketed in recent weeks.
