ICE just logged 49,571 arrests in a single month. That is not a typo, and July 2026 is now officially the busiest month of Trump's entire second term, as Trending Politics reported using government data crunched by the Associated Press.
To put that number in perspective, the month before Trump returned to office in January 2025, immigration arrests sat at roughly 8,000. Most of those were just people getting handed over from local jails. Now the agency is scooping up nearly 1,500 people per day. That is a 70 percent jump from February's total of 29,241 and a 15 percent leap over June's 43,021. The trajectory here looks like a hockey stick drawn by someone who had way too much coffee.
So how did we get here? Money and manpower, mostly. Congress opened the wallet in 2025, and ICE went on a hiring spree that added 12,000 fresh agents to the roster. The agency also ditched previous limits on where officers could operate and who they could go after. By December 2025, monthly totals had already cracked 40,177.
There was a brief cooldown earlier this year when arrests dipped to around 30,000 following a horrifying incident in Minneapolis where two far left activists shot at ICE agents during an operation. Numbers stayed flat for a stretch before climbing back above 43,000 in June and then rocketing to that eye popping July figure.
The real twist is that all of this happened while the agency was deliberately trying to stay out of the headlines. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, who took over earlier this year, openly said the strategy was shifting toward lower visibility operations. Gone were the splashy raids in major cities with news helicopters circling overhead. In their place came quieter sweeps that generated fewer viral moments but apparently way more actual arrests.
Mullin summed up the philosophy with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer. He told reporters that deportations were surging and the focus was on removing criminals from American streets. Nothing says stealth mode like publicly bragging about your numbers.
Texas and Florida did the heavy lifting, accounting for close to 20,000 of July's arrests all by themselves. Both states have leaned hard into 287(g) agreements, which basically let local cops moonlight as immigration enforcement officers in coordination with federal authorities. It turns out that when you deputize every sheriff's deputy in the Lone Star State, the numbers tend to go up.
Detention facilities are also feeling the pressure. Internal agency data showed more than 46,000 people booked into custody during July alone. By early August, the total population behind bars approached 68,000, flirting with previous highs from earlier in the administration. At this rate, ICE might need to start accepting reservations.
