A federal immigration agent was hit by a vehicle and fired his gun while trying to detain someone, according to police.
The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. on Route 72 near Mermaid Drive in the Manahawkin area of Stafford Township. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said they were attempting to take into custody Friedrich Castillo-Ormeno, a Peruvian immigrant allegedly in the country illegally, who had been ordered removed by an immigration judge in January.
ICE reported that agents tried stop a vehicle when the driver struck one of them, prompting the agent to fire at the fleeing car.
The injured agent was hospitalized, and authorities have not yet located the occupants of the vehicle or determined if anyone was hit. Photos from a bystander showed the agent on the ground by a gray vehicle and later on a stretcher.
