He specifically pushed back against the popular notion that addicts need to bottom out before getting better, noting that plenty of people who actually reach that lowest point end up dead or behind bars.
The timing of these revelations adds another layer to an already dramatic Biden family saga. Hunter's well-documented crack cocaine use played out during one of the most devastating chapters of their lives, following the 2015 passing of Beau Biden from brain cancer at just 46 years old. Hunter later detailed his struggles in his 2021 memoir, Beautiful Things.
Meanwhile, Joe Biden has been dealing with his own serious medical battle. After stepping away from the 2024 presidential contest on July 21, 2024, amid swirling concerns about his age and fitness, the former president received devastating news. In May 2025, his office confirmed that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive prostate cancer that had metastasized to his bones. The cancer was described as hormone-sensitive, with the family evaluating treatment plans alongside his medical team.
Now, to be crystal clear, Hunter did NOT claim that his addiction caused his father's cancer diagnosis. But he did acknowledge that the relentless emotional pressure from those turbulent years took a serious toll on Joe Biden's overall well-being. He put it plainly, saying the stress from that era simply never disappears.
One of his most striking lines? That unconditional love does not equal love without consequences or accountability. Coming from someone who lived through the depths of addiction while his father occupied the highest office in the land, that's a pretty powerful statement.
