GOP Discovers Magic Word That Terrifies Democrats: Capitalism

Well folks, it turns out that Republicans have been playing political chess all wrong when the answer was sitting right there on a Monopoly board the whole time. According to a report from USA Journal, a McLaughlin & Associates survey from July revealed something so obvious it practically had a neon sign over it: when you stop asking voters which party they like and start asking whether they prefer free market capitalism or big government socialism, the entire political landscape does a complete 180.

The generic congressional ballot has Democrats leading by three to five points, which is the political equivalent of being ahead by a field goal in the third quarter. Close enough to win, uncomfortable enough to sweat through your blazer. But when the question becomes about economic systems instead of party labels, Republicans suddenly look like they discovered cheat codes.

And why might that be? Oh, just because one third of Democrats now call themselves democratic socialists according to CNN polling. Fifty two percent of all Democrats have a favorable view of socialism, and Gallup puts that number at a whopping 66 percent. The DSA co-chair literally went on Fox News and rattled off a wish list that included abolishing the Senate, defunding the Pentagon, emptying prisons, and opening borders. That is not a parody. That was an actual television appearance by an actual political leader.

Meanwhile, Zohran Mamdani is apparently governing New York City with a platform that would feel right at home in Havana. DSA candidates are snagging primary victories in New York, Colorado, and California like they are collecting Pokemon. This is no longer some fringe movement hiding in a Brooklyn coffee shop. It is the most fired up, fastest growing faction within the Democratic Party.

Here is the punchline though. Sixty eight percent of voters told McLaughlin that the DSA aligned economic agenda would actually hurt America. Sixty eight percent! That is not a debate you need to win. That is a crowd you just need to hand bus tickets to on Election Day.

CNN's own Harry Enten has pointed out that the DSA's influence has crept beyond major cities into suburban and even some rural territories. Which means Democratic candidates in swing districts cannot simply pretend this association does not exist. Every DSA primary victory, every wild Fox News interview, every Mamdani press conference just superglues the socialist label more firmly onto the party.

The McLaughlin data basically hands Republicans a ready made campaign slogan on a silver platter. Forget playing defense with weak sauce lines like "I am not a socialist." The winning move is pointing out that your opponent's party has embraced an agenda that roughly three quarters of Americans want nothing to do with, and then explaining how that agenda would impact their paychecks, grocery bills, and neighborhoods.

So congratulations to the GOP for finally realizing that Americans overwhelmingly prefer the economic system they have been living under for 250 years. Groundbreaking stuff. The real question is whether they will actually use this revelation or fumble it like they fumble everything else.
