Meanwhile, New York City's top mayoral contender Zohran Mamdani is campaigning on a platform that fits snugly within that same ideological lane. DSA-backed candidates are racking up primary victories in New York, Colorado, and California like they're collecting Pokemon. This isn't some fringe group holding meetings in a college basement anymore. It's become the most fired-up and rapidly expanding wing of the entire Democratic coalition.
CNN analyst Harry Enten has pointed out that DSA influence has crept well beyond big cities into suburban and even some rural territory. That geographic spread means Democratic candidates in competitive districts can't just wave their hands and pretend the socialist wing doesn't exist.
