Something absolutely wild is happening in Oregon right now, and the political establishment should be sweating bullets.
Republican State Sen. Christine Drazan is sitting FOUR POINTS ahead of Democratic Gov. Tina Kotek in a brand new poll from Public Opinion Strategies, as Conservative Brief reported. Let that sink in for a second. This is Oregon we're talking about. A state that hasn't elected a Republican governor since Vic Atiyeh left office way back in 1987. Nearly four decades of blue dominance, and now the cracks are showing in spectacular fashion.
Drazan grabbed 48 percent to Kotek's 44 percent in the survey. Keep in mind, Kotek only beat Drazan by a razor thin 3 percent back in 2022. This rematch is shaping up to be even more explosive.
The Republican challenger was out on the campaign trail Thursday, visiting manufacturing facilities in Eugene and Springfield. She hammered the issue of public education, pointing out that graduation requirements were stripped away years ago and calling for their restoration. She wants students prepared for community college, trade programs, or four year universities, and argued that attending a public school shouldn't mean getting left behind.
Drazan also made it crystal clear this isn't about partisan tribalism. She told reporters this has nothing to do with what color jersey you wear and everything to do with making Oregon a place where people actually want to stay. She pointed out that residents keep fleeing to Texas, Nevada, Arizona, and Tennessee. Her message? The state needs a completely new vision and direction.
Even before this bombshell poll dropped, the writing was on the wall. The Cook Political Report downgraded the Oregon governor's contest from Solid Democrat to Likely Democrat on July 10. That's a seismic shift in political forecasting language. Cook's analysts noted that policies popular with Portland progressives are essentially toxic in the rest of the state, creating a recurring nightmare for Democrats.
The ad war is already heating up too. Drazan dropped her first television spot on August 6, just hours after Kotek launched an attack ad targeting her. This rematch is going to be absolutely vicious.
In other Oregon political news, Cook shifted Oregon's 5th Congressional District from Likely Democratic to Solid Democratic on July 16, boosting Rep. Janelle Bynum's outlook against Republican Patti Adair. That seat has bounced between parties recently, with Republican Lori Chavez-DeRemer winning it by 2.1 points in 2022 before Bynum flipped it back by 2.7 points in 2024.
The state's Senate race featuring incumbent Jeff Merkley against Republican David Brock Smith remains rated Solid Democratic by Cook. Oregon's 2nd Congressional District, covering most of central and eastern parts of the state, stays Solid Republican with Rep. Cliff Bentz facing Democrat Chris Beck.
Meanwhile, down in Tennessee, President Trump's endorsed candidates steamrolled through Republican primaries on Tuesday. Sen. Bill Hagerty cruised to an uncontested victory, advancing straight to November without breaking a sweat.
But all eyes should be on Oregon. If Drazan pulls this off, it would be one of the biggest political earthquakes in recent memory.
