Nothing says "party unity" quite like watching four of your own team members walk across the aisle and high five the opposition. That's essentially what happened Thursday when four House Republicans joined every Democrat to pass a war powers resolution designed to rein in Trump's military operations against Iran, as Trending Politics reported. The final tally was 214 to 208, which in congressional math translates to "just barely enough to make everyone furious."
So who are these magnificent four who decided to go rogue? Reps. Warren Davidson from Ohio, Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, Tom Barrett representing Michigan, and Thomas Massie out of Kentucky. Davidson and Massie have basically made a career out of opposing foreign military adventures, so this surprised approximately zero people who follow politics. Fitzpatrick and Barrett, meanwhile, are moderates staring down competitive re-election battles, so they've got their own math to worry about.
Barrett, who served in the Army before becoming a freshman congressman, told Fox News Digital that his stance hasn't wavered one bit. He stated that only Congress possesses the constitutional power to green light military action against Iran. He also mentioned being willing to collaborate with anyone on neutralizing threats without dragging the country into yet another forever war. All four of these rebels pulled the exact same move back in June on a nearly identical resolution.
Now, before anyone starts panicking, this whole thing is mostly symbolic theater. Even if the Senate passed the same measure, it wouldn't land on Trump's desk. Think of it as Congress's version of writing an angry letter and then not mailing it. But it did shine a spotlight on genuine fractures within the Republican caucus over how the Iran situation is being managed. Multiple GOP members have complained they're not getting enough intel about what's actually happening militarily.
The timing is particularly spicy, given that Iranian forces recently killed several American service members in Jordan and Iraq. U.S. Central Command announced that American forces wrapped up their twelfth straight night of strikes targeting Iran's maritime capabilities, air defense networks, and other military infrastructure.
Democrat Jason Crow of Colorado, also an Army veteran, didn't mince words. He pointed out that 18 American service members have lost their lives since hostilities began, hundreds more sustained injuries, and billions in taxpayer money have been spent. He called the entire operation "an unmitigated disaster" and accused the President of doubling down on failure.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries couldn't resist doing a little victory dance afterward, claiming Republicans are "on the run" and close to losing their grip on the House. Meanwhile, Trump previously labeled these same four lawmakers "unpatriotic" after their June vote, so you can imagine the White House Christmas card list just got four names shorter. Again.
With the GOP clinging to a razor thin majority, every single defection stings like a paper cut in a lemon juice factory.
