John Fetterman just told the world he will never campaign against Republican Dave McCormick.
The Pennsylvania Democrat dropped that bombshell during an interview this week, as first reported, calling his GOP counterpart from the Keystone State "a great guy" and declaring he would "absolutely never move against" his buddy. He stopped short of saying he would formally endorse McCormick, but honestly, does he even need to at this point? In 2026 Washington, simply refusing to sabotage a colleague from the other party is basically a declaration of war against your own team.
And oh boy, the Democratic caucus is seething.
Here is what makes this story so juicy. Fetterman and McCormick are not just playing nice for cameras. These two actually built a joint fundraising operation called Common Ground PA, which lets Pennsylvania donors contribute to both senators at once. When Governor Josh Shapiro apparently decided to snub the Great American State Fair on the National Mall by refusing to organize Pennsylvania's booth, reportedly because of his ongoing friction with Trump, the two senators teamed up and made sure their state was represented anyway.
That is genuine, roll up your sleeves bipartisanship. Not the fake kind where politicians shake hands at a luncheon and then vote in lockstep with their party five minutes later.
Fetterman faces voters again in 2028, which raises an obvious question. Will McCormick return the favor and stay on the sidelines when his Democratic pal needs it most?
The progressive wing of the Democratic Party is absolutely losing its mind over this friendship. The DSA crowd, the same faction that just scored primary victories in Michigan, New York, and Colorado, sees Fetterman's loyalty to McCormick as a full blown act of treason. Apparently they labeled him a communist recently. He fired right back and called them communists too. You cannot make this stuff up.
Here is the thing the far left refuses to accept. Pennsylvania is not a deep blue stronghold. It swings. It has real conservative communities and moderate voters who do not appreciate senators treating governance like tribal warfare. Fetterman seems to be one of the only Democrats in national politics who still understands that basic reality.
While his colleagues are busy nominating candidates like Abdul El-Sayed and debating theological hot takes, Fetterman is out here acting like a senator who actually wants to win in a competitive state. He is far from flawless and gets plenty of policy calls wrong. But the man grasps something his party desperately needs to relearn. The person sitting across the aisle is a fellow senator, not a mortal enemy.
McCormick does not face voters until 2030, so his seat is locked down for now. Pennsylvanians will be watching closely over the coming years to see if Common Ground PA actually delivers results or fizzles into a nice sounding slogan.
So far, it looks like the real deal. And that is exactly why the Democratic establishment cannot stand it.
