"Oxferd Comma." Yes, they misspelled "Oxford" in their own super secret operation title. These are the people who were supposedly protecting national security. They couldn't even spell check their conspiracy name.
The purpose of this investigation was to figure out whether Trump was being directed by, controlled by, or coordinating with the Russian government in ways that threatened national security. Sounds dramatic, right? So what was their rock solid evidence? What smoking gun launched this massive probe? Hold onto your hats. Trump asked Comey for loyalty. He wondered aloud if an investigation could be wrapped up. And then he fired the guy. That's it. That was the whole enchilada.
The FBI basically watched a president exercise his completely constitutional power to remove the director and said, "Seems suspicious, better open a criminal case." That's like getting investigated by your HR department because you used the suggestion box.
This document spawned what became Robert Mueller's special counsel investigation, which was not exactly a small operation. We're talking two full years, roughly 500 witnesses, 40 FBI agents working the case, approximately 2,800 subpoenas issued, and a cool $32 million in taxpayer dollars spent. The conclusion after all that? Zero evidence of conspiracy or coordination between Trump's campaign and Russia regarding the 2016 election. Nothing. Zilch. A $32 million receipt for absolutely nada.
For years, conservatives kept saying this exact document was out there somewhere. Democrats and most of the media kept insisting such a thing was pure fantasy, the fever dream of paranoid conspiracy theorists who couldn't accept that the FBI was nobly defending democracy. Turns out those "conspiracy theorists" were just people who could read a calendar and notice that a criminal probe launched one week after a firing might be, oh I don't know, retaliatory.
The article also notes that the CIA reportedly had burn bags, the intelligence community allegedly concealed evidence of Chinese election interference, and throughout all of it, anyone who dared call the whole thing a witch hunt got labeled a tinfoil hat enthusiast.
Now the paperwork is publicly available for anyone who wants to see it. Every journalist, news anchor, and politician who spent half a decade swearing this was all perfectly legitimate law enforcement should probably be feeling a little uncomfortable right about now. Though let's be honest, they probably aren't. Self awareness has never been Washington's strong suit.
The document exists. It's real. And "Oxferd Comma" might go down as the most embarrassingly named government operation since, well, pick any of them really.
