The FBI just foiled an alleged ISIS-inspired bombing plot targeting the New York State Capitol in Albany.
Jessica Bowie, a 35-year-old Albany resident, was hit with charges of attempting to provide material support to ISIS after she allegedly schemed to detonate explosives at the Capitol building, which sits less than two miles from her front door, according to reports. Her alleged goal? Obliterate as much of the structure as she could, slaughter state senators while they were in session, and then bolt to ISIS-controlled territory in Syria.
Her own words from the criminal complaint are absolutely chilling. She allegedly stated she wanted to obliterate as much of the Capitol as possible, wipe out senators during their meetings, make them lose critical documents, and deal a blow to the American system. She also allegedly referenced destroying "taghut," a term used by extremists.
But it gets even wilder. When asked about her dream target, Bowie allegedly said she would have preferred the White House with President Trump inside, but acknowledged that would be an even tougher operation to pull off.
Bowie reportedly converted to Islam five years ago and had been on the radar for some time. Her social media accounts were reportedly shut down multiple times for violating platform rules. She allegedly posted messages praising Allah for September 11th and threatened to poison Americans once she could migrate. She even allegedly recorded a formal pledge of loyalty to ISIS, known as a "Bayah," and spread it online.
The feds were watching her closely. When Bowie allegedly made contact with a confidential FBI source who was posing as an ISIS facilitator, agents let the operation develop. She reportedly scouted the Capitol grounds on five separate occasions between mid-July and early August, snapping photos and mapping out her attack strategy. She allegedly purchased bomb-making supplies using $200 that came from the FBI's confidential source. Agents swooped in and arrested her before she could act on any of it.
Assistant Attorney General John Eisenberg laid it out in stark terms, stating that Bowie allegedly planned to deploy an explosive device at the Capitol with the intent to kill public officials and level as much of the building as she could before fleeing to ISIS territory in Syria.
This is textbook counterterrorism work. Patient surveillance, methodical evidence gathering, and a perfectly timed arrest before anyone got hurt. The FBI under Director Kash Patel gets a major win here.
The timing is also impossible to ignore. This alleged plot was unfolding in the same state where political leaders have been battling ICE enforcement, where some officials have welcomed activists sympathetic to Hamas into political coalitions, and where certain politicians have pushed to restrict federal law enforcement's access to data.
Bowie allegedly wanted to inflict maximum damage on American institutions and then run straight into the arms of the nation's enemies. The FBI caught her first. Let's hope they keep catching them.
