Hold onto your seats, folks, because the walls are closing in on Dr. Anthony Fauci and things just got very, very interesting.
Senate investigators now have a copy of Fauci's government-issued iPhone from his tenure at the Department of Health and Human Services, according to Conservative Brief. The device was handed over to the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, led by Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin. What secrets could be lurking on that phone? Nobody knows yet, but the timing is absolutely explosive.
Why? Because this bombshell drops just days after Fauci sat before the Senate under subpoena and pleaded the Fifth Amendment more than 100 times. That is not a typo. Over one hundred refusals to answer questions from lawmakers demanding transparency about the pandemic that changed every American's life.
Johnson confirmed the phone transfer on X, saying the device will "hopefully address many of the questions he refused to answer" during that fiery hearing. Translation: if Fauci won't talk, maybe his phone will.
And it gets spicier. The Senate is scheduled to vote Thursday on a resolution that would hold the former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director in contempt of Congress. That is a serious legal hammer, and Republican senators seem eager to swing it.
The phone is reportedly connected to a sweeping investigation into how the federal government handled COVID-19, including explosive questions about research tied to the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Investigators also recently got their hands on more than 1,000 pages from Fauci's personal pandemic-era diary, which HHS delivered before last week's hearing.
During that dramatic session, GOP senators grilled Fauci on federal funding for gain-of-function research, the origins of the virus, and key choices made by top health officials. He stonewalled nearly every question by invoking his constitutional right against self-incrimination. Democrats rushed to his defense, calling the investigation politically motivated and insisting Fauci was well within his rights.
But Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, the man who subpoenaed Fauci in the first place, is not backing down one inch. Paul has openly argued that the former White House medical adviser should face legal consequences and has raised questions about whether President Biden's pardon of Fauci actually shields him from every possible legal claim. Paul suggested courts may ultimately need to settle the pardon's scope.
Paul also dropped a photo on X showing Fauci sitting alone at the witness table with three words that sent political junkies into a frenzy: "Accountability is coming."
Whether this government phone contains anything that could blow the investigation wide open remains a total mystery. But one thing is crystal clear: Senate Republicans are turning up the heat, and they are not planning to let Fauci's silence be the final word on how America navigated its worst public health crisis in generations.
