A school board chairman just obliterated a congressman's daughter in Georgia's special election runoff. Everton Blair, who previously led the Gwinnett County School Board, captured the 13th Congressional District seat on Tuesday, toppling Marcye Scott by a 53 to 47 percent margin, as Conservative Brief reported. The kicker? He was trailing by eight points after the first round of voting in July.
Let that sink in. Marcye Scott had a comfortable 46 to 38 percent lead in the initial all-party contest. Nobody got enough votes to avoid a runoff, so the two Democrats squared off head to head. Blair somehow pulled off a political Lazarus act and completely reversed the gap. That is the electoral equivalent of being down three touchdowns at halftime and winning by a field goal.
Scott ran on the promise of carrying forward her late father's legacy. Rep. David Scott represented that Atlanta-area district for over twenty years after first winning his seat back in 2002. He passed away in April at age 80. His daughter pitched herself as the natural heir, vowing to keep his work going for constituents. Voters, however, had other plans.
Blair showed up with a progressive policy buffet that would make Bernie Sanders weep tears of joy. Medicare for All. Universal childcare. A tax aimed at households pulling in more than $50 million. Enormous federal clean energy investments reminiscent of the Green New Deal. Basically, he promised to spend money that hasn't been printed yet on programs that don't exist yet, and voters said, "Sounds great, you're hired."
Scott had hoped to follow in the footsteps of Arizona Democrat Adelita Grijalva, who successfully replaced her own late father, Rep. Raul Grijalva, through a special election last year. Grijalva is now pursuing a full two-year term this November. The congressional dynasty playbook just didn't work this time around.
Blair's triumph arrives on the heels of another progressive pickup. Aisha Wahab recently captured the California seat formerly occupied by Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell. Once Blair and Wahab are formally sworn in, the House math gets even more uncomfortable for Republican leadership. The expected breakdown will stand at 218 Republicans, 214 Democrats, one independent, and two vacancies still lingering.
That means GOP leaders can basically lose zero votes on anything. One defection and the whole operation grinds to a halt. The margin is so thin you could slip it under a locked door.
Before his death, David Scott had faced growing pressure from fellow Democrats to step aside. Health concerns and repeated absences led House Democrats to strip him of his position as the top Democrat on the Agriculture Committee. Born in South Carolina and raised across multiple states, Scott earned an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania and built an advertising firm in Atlanta before launching his political career.
Now his district belongs to a former school board chair who turned an eight-point deficit into a six-point victory, proving once again that in American politics, name recognition is nice, but a good comeback story is better.
