Well, someone decided to go on national television and basically read a political wish list that sounds like it was written during an all night college dorm brainstorming session fueled by energy drinks and utopian fever dreams. Megan Romer, co-chair of the Democratic Socialists of America, sat across from Fox News host Shannon Bream and just casually confirmed every single radical position Bream threw at her, as reported by Conservative Brief. Abolish the Senate? Yep. Get rid of ICE? Sure thing. Eliminate borders entirely? That's on the agenda. Blanket amnesty? You bet. Defund the Pentagon? Obviously. Close down prisons? Why not. Seize public ownership of most major corporations? Absolutely. It was like watching someone play radical bingo and enthusiastically stamp every square.
Romer did offer the tiny caveat that ditching borders and shuttering prisons would be "longer term goals," which is reassuring in the same way someone saying they plan to set your house on fire, but not until next Tuesday.
The clip went mega viral on X, racking up millions of views, and suddenly Democrats found themselves scrambling to distance their party from positions that play about as well in swing districts as a skunk at a garden party. Annie Andrews, a Democrat seeking a Senate seat in South Carolina, called the platform "completely un-American and unhinged." Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman asked why Democrats can't simply call out the DSA, saying "This isn't a big tent, it's anarchy." Former Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan begged "normal thinking" party members to publicly renounce the organization before it drags everyone down with it. Activist Shannon Watts pointed out that moderates and independents would look at this platform and collectively lose their minds.
Republicans, meanwhile, barely needed to do opposition research. Ted Cruz from Texas summed up his feelings in four words: "These people are insane." Florida Senator Ashley Moody accused democratic socialists of being determined to destroy America. When your political opponents don't even need to exaggerate your positions because you already confirmed everything on camera, you might want to rethink your media strategy.
The DSA responded with a statement attempting to soften the edges, painting their vision as one where material needs get met, crime drops because of good jobs, and families afford their rent. They also took shots at mainstream Democrats for allegedly serving billionaires and defense contractors, which is a bold move when you're the reason those same Democrats are stress eating before the 2026 midterms.
This isn't some fringe group yelling into the void, either. DSA-backed candidates have already won primaries in New York, Philadelphia, and Denver. Claire Valdez grabbed an open seat previously held by Rep. Nydia Velazquez. Darializa Avila Chevalier knocked off incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat. Chris Rabb won a Philadelphia-area primary, and Melat Kiros beat Rep. Diana DeGette in Colorado. All of them are expected to win easily in November in deep blue districts, potentially expanding DSA representation in Congress beyond Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, himself a democratic socialist, has only boosted the group's visibility.
Their full platform reads like a political science professor's fever dream: a 32 hour workweek without reduced pay, universal healthcare, publicly owned housing, a Green New Deal seizing energy and transportation, defunding the Defense Department, ending all aid to Israel, abolishing the Electoral College, and replacing both the presidency and Supreme Court with bodies chosen by and answerable to Congress. Nothing says "democracy" quite like consolidating all power under one branch of government.
