Nothing says productive governance quite like two adults talking over each other on national television while accomplishing absolutely nothing. That is exactly what went down when Rep. Lauren Underwood from Illinois squared off against Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin during a congressional hearing that quickly went off the rails, as The American Tribune reported.
Underwood came in swinging, accusing the Trump administration's immigration detention operation of being riddled with medical neglect, overcrowding, abuse, and what she called a historically high rate of detainee fatalities. She referenced a personal trip to the Miami Correctional Facility located in Bunker Hill, Indiana, where she says detainees told her that getting medication refills could take months. We are talking about treatment for serious conditions like diabetes, not exactly something you want to put on backorder.
She also mentioned detainees allegedly going without care for infected boils and other medical problems. Then she dropped what she clearly thought was the mic, noting that someone passed away shortly after her visit and claiming that 2025 saw more ICE custody fatalities than any prior year. So she posed a question to Mullin about whether DHS had specific internal goals or policies aimed at bringing those numbers down.
That is when Mullin basically said, hold my water bottle.
The secretary fired back with a line that will absolutely live on in congressional highlight reels. He told her flat out that her figures were not accurate, citing a rate of 0.009 percent and a total of 54 fatalities during the current president's tenure. Before Underwood could even process this statistical counterpunch, Mullin pivoted to her own backyard. He pointed out that a person is roughly twice as likely to pass away inside an Illinois state penitentiary compared to a federal immigration detention facility. Ouch.
Underwood was not having any of it. She started talking over the secretary and called for the chairman like someone flagging down a waiter at a restaurant where the service has gone completely sideways. She reminded Mullin repeatedly that it was her allotted time and that he was merely invited to the committee.
Mullin kept going anyway, because apparently invitations come with a side of unsolicited statistics. He noted that federal detention centers provide one doctor for every 1,000 people, while Illinois prisons manage roughly one doctor for every 1,800 inmates. Then he basically narrated his own point by saying she wanted to focus on detention centers despite her own state having worse ratios.
When Underwood insisted she was well informed, Mullin delivered perhaps the most diplomatically savage response possible. He simply told her no, she was not.
The chairman eventually stepped in and told Mullin he would get his own time to speak, prompting a polite exchange of thank yous that somehow felt more passive aggressive than the entire preceding argument. Congress, folks. Your tax dollars at work.
