If you thought political recruiting couldn't possibly get any worse, allow me to introduce you to the Democratic Party's 2026 roster of candidates, which reads less like a ballot and more like a police blotter crossed with a reality TV casting call gone horribly wrong.
As USA Journal reported, let's start with Maine, where the original Democratic Senate nominee, Graham Platner, had both a Nazi tattoo and a rape allegation hanging over his head. He lasted until about three weeks ago before getting swapped out for Troy Jackson, who reportedly tied the knot with his second cousin. And folks, this was considered an UPGRADE. That's where the bar is right now.
Over in Texas, a state Democrats haven't carried statewide since 1994, James Talarico is giving it a shot anyway. His platform highlights include believing God is nonbinary, an unusual public fixation on transgender children, and raking in millions from Reid Hoffman, who happens to be a Jeffrey Epstein associate and also bankrolled E. Jean Carroll's legal fight against Trump. Running on that platform in Texas is certainly a bold strategy.
But wait, there's so much more! Arizona's 6th District features Joanna Mendoza, whose marriage to a Syrian national lasted a whopping 16 days. California's 22nd has Randy Villegas, a prison abolition enthusiast who, while serving on a school board, rehired a known pedophile. Nothing says "trust me with governance" quite like that combination.
Colorado's 8th District candidate Manny Rutinel went on a social media deletion spree and, perhaps more notably, helped tank legislation that would have required mandatory prison time for convicted child sex predators. In Iowa's 3rd, Sarah Trone Garriot officiated a satanist wedding ceremony. New Jersey's 12th saw Adam Hamawy actually WIN his primary despite documented connections to the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and networks linked to al-Qaeda. And New Mexico's Gabe Vazquez apparently staged a completely fake wedding.
Then there's Washington Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, seeking reelection, who reportedly decapitated a chicken during her college years and recently fell apart during an NPR interview when asked basic questions about socialist connections within her own party.
RNC spokesperson Natalie Baldassarre summed things up by saying Democrats are openly embracing the fringe elements and proving how disconnected from reality they've become. Republicans plan to force every competitive race opponent to either endorse or reject this magnificent collection of nominees.
The broader argument here is that this isn't just a few weirdos slipping through the cracks. This is what the Democratic primary process actually generates when your activist base consists largely of DSA members and progressive revolutionaries. The party that once produced Harry Truman and John Kennedy now produces candidates with terrorist ties, pedophile enabling records, and Nazi tattoos.
Apparently, normal people just don't want to put a D next to their name on a ballot anymore. And honestly, looking at their teammates, can you really blame them?
