The Democratic Party's internal civil war just got a whole lot spicier, and former DNC vice chair David Hogg is throwing gasoline on the fire.
During a recent CNN sit-down with Kaitlan Collins, Hogg essentially told centrist Democrats they can either join the progressive movement or kindly step aside. When Collins asked what he would say to moderates worried about far-left nominees struggling in general elections, Hogg did not mince words, as Trending Politics reported.
"They don't have the right values that are aligned with, not the Democratic base, but the American people," Hogg fired back. He went on to say voters are fed up with Democrats constantly explaining why solving problems is impossible.
Then he turned his attention directly to centrists, telling them they need to come up with something fresh for voters instead of recycling the same tired 2024 talking points. Talk about a welcome mat being yanked right out from under people's feet!
Here's the juicy backstory. Hogg won a DNC vice chair seat back in February 2025 during the party's winter gathering. This came right after Democrats suffered a brutal triple whammy, losing the White House and both chambers of Congress. So naturally, the guy decided the best course of action was to wage war against his own team.
Through his organization, Leaders We Deserve, Hogg set out to raise $20 million to fund more than a dozen primary challenges against sitting Democratic members of Congress. He called Capitol Hill a place that rewards seniority while protecting complacency. The group managed to pull in roughly $15 million between 2023 and October of the previous year.
This did not sit well with DNC Chair Ken Martin. Not one bit. Martin publicly declared that no party officer should try to tip the scales in a primary contest. He pushed to expand the DNC's neutrality rules beyond presidential races and asked officers to sign a pledge committing to staying out of primaries.
Hogg refused to choose between his DNC gig and his PAC work. That stubbornness led to a procedural complaint, and eventually the party voted to nullify his vice chair election entirely. When new leadership elections rolled around, Hogg announced he would not seek another term. His parting shot? He cited a "fundamental disagreement" about what a vice chair should do and declared that comfortable people holding power never change.
His entire tenure at the DNC lasted just 130 days. That is barely enough time to learn where the coffee machine is, let alone reshape an entire political party.
Hogg also suggested during his CNN appearance that certain Democrats are not pushing back hard enough against the Trump Administration. He described ongoing efforts to recruit candidates from his generation who prioritize effectiveness over seniority.
So there you have it, folks. The Democratic Party is essentially eating itself alive while one of its youngest power players stands at the buffet table demanding everyone order something different. Whether this progressive purge strategy actually wins general elections remains the billion dollar question nobody seems eager to answer.
