Country musician Aaron Lee Tasjan just learned that lecturing your audience about politics in Texas might not be the career move you think it is. As The American Tribune reported, eight concertgoers literally stood up and walked right out of his performance at 1859 St. Joseph's Church in Galveston, Texas, because they weren't feeling his progressive anthem called "I Love America Better Than You." Bold title for a guy performing in Texas, but sure, go off king.
The track, which appears on his 2024 album "Stellar Evolution," is basically a greatest hits collection of progressive talking points. We're talking references to Barack Obama, immigration policy, January 6th, gun ownership, transgender issues, Christianity, and "queer trans feminists." And the whole time, Tasjan keeps insisting he loves this country more than the people whose beliefs he's openly attacking. Nothing says "I love you" quite like telling someone everything they believe is wrong.
Now here's where it gets really entertaining. Instead of shrugging off the walkout like a professional entertainer, Tasjan decided to publish an entire dissertation about why those eight people leaving actually proved his song was working. He claimed that a musician's purpose "is not simply to sell tickets and t-shirts and receive applause." Which is a really convenient philosophy when people stop buying your tickets and giving you applause.
He wrote that songs have "medicinal properties" and that artists should deliver truth whether audiences want it or not. He also warned that folks who reject uncomfortable ideas risk falling into "embittered stagnation" and contributing to a national "descent into fracture." That's a lot of fancy words to describe eight people deciding they'd rather be literally anywhere else on a Saturday night.
Tasjan even thanked those who walked out for exercising their free will, which is the celebrity equivalent of saying "I'm not mad, I'm actually laughing right now" while furiously typing a 600 word statement.
The situation got even spicier on social media. On X, Tasjan took a shot at his critics, calling them people who merely "play the role of patriotic American." That prompted user Leon Savon to deliver what might be the most concise music review in internet history: "You're an absolute scumbag. Nothing more. Nothing less."
And Tasjan's response? He basically agreed. "Well...yes," he wrote, tossed out a kissing face emoji, and told the guy to give the song a listen. Nothing screams artistic integrity like responding to criticism with a smooch emoji.
The beautiful irony here is that those eight audience members delivered the most powerful review possible without writing a single word. They just got up, grabbed their jackets, and headed for the exits. Meanwhile, Tasjan needed several paragraphs to explain why people not enjoying his music was actually a triumph of artistic expression. Sometimes the walk speaks louder than the song.
