Nothing says "principled stand" quite like discovering your moral objections to something right after you lose your primary. Texas Senator John Cornyn is apparently spending his final months in Congress on what can only be described as a spite-fueled farewell tour, and Donald Trump just put him on blast for it.
As USA Journal reported, Trump took to Truth Social on Friday morning to lay out what he sees as a pretty transparent revenge scheme. The gist? Cornyn had absolutely zero issues with the Anti-Weaponization Fund. No complaints. No public statements of concern. Not so much as a skeptical glance at the legal framework or settlement terms. Everything was peachy keen.
Then Trump endorsed Ken Paxton over Cornyn in the Texas Senate primary. Paxton won. And wouldn't you know it, Cornyn suddenly became a constitutional scholar with deep reservations about this very same fund he had been totally cool with for months. What a coincidence!
Trump pointed out that the fund was not created to benefit him personally. It was designed to compensate people who were targeted by what he called politically motivated prosecutions under the Biden administration. Trump also noted that he gave up his own portion of the settlement, money he could have received related to the Mar-a-Lago raid and other incidents, so it could go toward helping others instead.
Here is where things get deliciously ironic. Cornyn is essentially using the Anti-Weaponization Fund as a weapon. Let that marinate for a second. The guy is weaponizing the thing specifically named after not doing that. You honestly cannot write comedy this good.
The strategy is simple and brutal. Todd Blanche needs every single Republican vote for his confirmation because Democrats will unanimously oppose him. One GOP holdout torpedoes the whole thing. Cornyn, along with Senator Tillis who is reportedly pulling a similar move, has effectively turned the confirmation process into a hostage negotiation. The hostages? The very Americans the fund was supposed to help.
But here is the thing about revenge tours: they have expiration dates. Cornyn's Senate career ends on January 3rd, and Paxton, the guy Trump backed, takes over. So the workarounds are pretty straightforward. Keep Blanche as acting Attorney General, or simply withdraw the nomination and resubmit it once the new Senate is seated and Cornyn is watching from his couch in Texas.
Trump closed his Truth Social post with "Thank you for your attention to this matter," which has the energy of someone who already knows exactly how this movie ends. It is the political equivalent of "per my last email."
So Cornyn gets a few more months to make his point, whatever that point actually is at this stage, and then the door hits him on the way out. Quite the legacy move, Senator. Really sticking it to those folks whose lives were turned upside down just so you could score some parting shots against the guy who endorsed your opponent.
