Well, well, well. One of the most recognizable faces in liberal cable news just went absolutely nuclear on his own team, and the fallout is spectacular.
Chris Matthews, the veteran political commentator who spent more than five decades entrenched in Democratic politics and progressive media, according to reports showed up on Morning Joe this Wednesday and absolutely unloaded on the far-left faction of his beloved party. And let me tell you, he did NOT hold back.
The former speechwriter for President Jimmy Carter flat out called the progressive wing's agenda "crap." Yes, you read that correctly. A lifelong Democrat used that exact word on live television to describe what the Democratic Socialists of America are peddling.
Matthews took particular aim at the DSA's wish list, rattling off their positions like a prosecutor reading charges. Abolish ICE? Check. Eliminate border enforcement entirely? Check. Get rid of prisons? You bet. Defund the Pentagon? That too. He painted a picture of a platform so far out there that mainstream Democrats should be running from it at full speed.
He even brought up the Iran hostage crisis under Carter to make his point about national defense. When foreign adversaries kidnap your diplomats, you actually need a military, Matthews argued. Revolutionary concept, apparently.
This whole eruption came on the heels of some seriously close calls for the party establishment. Democratic socialist Francesca Hong barely lost to moderate David Crowley in Wisconsin's gubernatorial primary. Meanwhile, progressive firebrand Abdul El-Sayed has been shaking things up over in Michigan. The socialist wing is knocking on the door, and Matthews clearly thinks somebody needs to bolt it shut.
He specifically called out AOC for defending the "big tent" approach, saying that strategy forces every single Democrat to answer for the most extreme positions in the coalition. That is political poison, according to the veteran operative.
Here is where things get really juicy for the midterms. Matthews practically gave Republicans their entire closing argument on a silver platter. He predicted that the GOP will spend the final six weeks before Election Day tying every Democrat to figures like Zohran Mamdani and El-Sayed. Every single candidate with a D next to their name will be forced to answer for the socialist caucus.
His prescription for survival? Stop playing footsie with the radical left immediately. Stand up in front of voters and explicitly reject the DSA platform. Talk about labor unions, civil rights, and opportunity, but make crystal clear that you are not part of that crowd.
"Thank you, DSA, for telling us what you believe in. I don't believe in that stuff," Matthews suggested as basically a template response.
The irony here is almost too delicious. One of liberal media's most prominent voices just handed conservatives their best campaign ad of the cycle. Sometimes the biggest threat to a political party is not the opposition. It is somebody on your own side with a microphone and zero filter.
