Nothing says "welcome to Chili's" quite like a workplace pronoun controversy that ends up taking over the entire internet. A former employee at a Louisiana Chili's location went mega viral after claiming he got canned simply for not using a coworker's preferred pronouns, but the restaurant chain is singing a very different tune, as reported by The American Tribune.
Wesley Kirk Ford Jr. hopped on Facebook to announce that the Chili's in Denham Springs gave him the boot because he referred to a nonbinary coworker by what he described as "her actual legal government name." He punctuated this revelation with a couple of "lolol"s, because apparently nothing screams "I just lost my source of income" like laughing out loud on social media.
Chili's, however, decided this was one of those rare occasions where they absolutely needed to break their usual silence on personnel matters. A spokesperson told Fox News Digital that Ford was actually terminated because he repeatedly mocked and intimidated his coworker, not because of some philosophical disagreement about gender. They say he was asked multiple times to knock it off, and he simply refused. The coworker apparently couldn't even finish their shift because of what Chili's characterized as targeted, intentional, antagonizing behavior.
Ford followed up his initial post with a video a few days later, explaining that the whole situation revolved around his refusal to call the coworker by their chosen name, which was apparently "Fish." Now look, we've all worked with people who have unusual nicknames, but this particular naming convention became the hill Ford chose to professionally expire on. He emphasized that he'd never been fired or disciplined at any previous job and declared he was done "participating" in all of it.
Meanwhile, Chili's doubled down harder than a customer ordering extra queso. Their spokesperson called his actions "intentional, targeted, and designed to provoke a reaction," adding that this repeated bullying created a hostile working environment. They maintained that disrespectful behavior toward team members violates their policies, regardless of the circumstances.
Ford also announced his intention to find a First Amendment or civil rights attorney, suggesting he believes there's a legal case buried somewhere in those baby back ribs of workplace drama.
And because no modern controversy is complete without a boycott threat, conservatives on X immediately started sharpening their pitchforks. One user called for the "Bud Light treatment," because apparently every corporate controversy now gets measured on the Bud Light scale. Others encouraged Ford to sue for emotional distress and cheered him on for standing his ground.
So now Chili's joins the ever growing list of restaurant chains that have accidentally wandered into the culture wars. One side says it was about pronouns, the other side says it was about harassment, and the rest of us are just sitting here wondering if the Presidente Margaritas are still on happy hour special.
