The timing could not have been more politically combustible. Buffalo City Hall raised the Somali flag in Niagara Square to celebrate diversity, just 24 hours after city officials announced they were canceling the annual downtown Fourth of July fireworks display, as Trending Politics first reported.
Fillmore District Council Member Mitch Nowakowski posted about the flag raising on Facebook, writing that he was proud to stand with his Somali neighbors and friends. "Buffalo is stronger because of our diversity," Nowakowski declared.
The reaction online was swift and furious. Facebook users flooded the comment section, with the top comment reading simply: "The American Flag should be there, period!!!" Others pointed out the glaring optics of flying a foreign nation's flag while simultaneously scrapping the city's Independence Day celebration.
"I thank my God everyday I no longer live in NY!" another commenter wrote, capturing the general sentiment of the backlash.
The fireworks cancellation came after city officials said they were unable to secure a suitable, widely accessible viewing location for the downtown show. Mayor Sean Ryan explained that the city had been counting on local businessman Russ Salvatore to help with the event, but those plans fell through for this year.
"The big vendor that was going to help us was Russ Salvatore, and we thought it would be easiest to move the fireworks back to his location for this year, but he is committed to fireworks for next year," Ryan said.
So to recap: no fireworks for America's birthday, but plenty of fanfare for a foreign flag ceremony. Whether the timing was intentional or just spectacularly tone deaf, Buffalo's leadership managed to hand critics the easiest layup in recent memory. The juxtaposition of canceling a patriotic tradition while simultaneously raising another country's flag at City Hall practically writes the outrage headlines by itself.
