Nothing says "I have my finger on the pulse of America" quite like an 83 year old self described socialist telling a younger senator he is disconnected from regular people. Yet here we are, folks.
As Conservative Brief reported, Bernie Sanders went on NBC's Meet the Press over the weekend and absolutely torched John Fetterman, the hoodie wearing senator from Pennsylvania, declaring him "way out of touch with the people of America." This coming from a guy who honeymooned in the Soviet Union and thinks bread lines build character.
So what sparked this geriatric cage match? It all started because Sanders endorsed a Maine Senate candidate named Graham Platner. Fetterman had some thoughts about that endorsement, particularly the part where Platner had Nazi associated tattoos, which polls showed Americans were not exactly thrilled about. Then Platner dropped out of his race after multiple women came forward with credible allegations of sexual misconduct. When host Kristen Welker asked Sanders if he regretted backing the guy, Bernie basically said "let's not play Monday morning quarterback," which is political speak for "I would rather eat my own shoe than answer that."
Sanders threw out a fun statistic during the interview, claiming Fetterman only reflects the views of roughly 19 percent of Pennsylvania Democrats. When pressed for which specific poll showed that number, Sanders provided exactly zero citations. Just vibes, apparently.
Bernie also insisted that Fetterman is wrong on Israel policy and "many other issues," though he conveniently declined to name what those other issues actually are. Very specific criticism there, Senator.
The whole feud highlights a growing fracture inside the Democratic Party between its moderate wing and its progressive faction. Fetterman originally had strong backing from leftist activists when he burst onto the scene, but the relationship has soured considerably. Fetterman maintains that he hasn't changed at all. Rather, his party is the one that shifted.
Things have gotten so tense that Fetterman has publicly wondered whether certain Democrats even want him in their caucus anymore. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer felt compelled to step in last week, calling Fetterman "a very good member of Congress" and insisting Democrats are still a "big tent party" that can handle disagreements. That is the political equivalent of your mom telling everyone at Thanksgiving to please stop fighting.
Meanwhile, Republicans are practically rolling out the welcome mat. Senate Majority Leader John Thune confirmed that he and several GOP senators have chatted about Fetterman's frustrations and would happily invite him to switch teams.
So to recap: Bernie endorsed a candidate with Nazi tattoos and sexual misconduct allegations, refused to admit that was a bad call, and then told Fetterman that he is the one who is disconnected from reality. The Democratic Party is basically a reality show at this point, and honestly, the ratings have never been better.
